(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)I think it is the whole show aspect, not the wearing women's clothes aspect that bothers me. I'm not bothered by men, straight or not, wearing women's clothes. It is the fake breasts and the fake voices and the way drag shows just seem to be mocking women that reminds me very much of blackface.
Re: confession thread
(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)this is just odd to me. straight men can also explore their sexuality by wearing women's clothes and gay men are just as likely to be misogynistic and just see women as a series of stereotypes to be mocked.
Re: confession thread
(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 12:42 am (UTC)(link)Gay men can be just as misogynistic, if not more so, than straight men. Many think that because they're gay they get a free pass.
I just personally hold both gay and straight men to the same standard.
Drag artists are very dedicated to their craft and take it seriously since it's their bread and butter. They're not mimicking women (unless they're trying to be fish), they're poking fun at themselves because they're men wearing dresses. Patriarchal rules be damned. The joke isn't on women, but the drag queens themselves for being (fabulous) failures. With fishy queens the fun is aimed at confusing straight men.
Despite what TV would tell you, drag queens face a lot of discrimination, and I don't think anybody would be in the business if they honestly didn't love their craft.
As a black person, I feel that blackface comes from a very different place, where the aim is to laugh at black people, not with them.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 01:08 am (UTC)(link)The difference is that drag queens are at least funny about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 11:40 am (UTC)(link)Besides, I like seeing men in fancy clothes. I think I was born in the wrong century.
