I can get why, but then I think it's also a pity because it sort of maintains the illusion fanfic is a girl thing, and yeah, while they're certainly a majority, I met some guy writers over the years (whose pen names were ambiguous), so I know it's not reality.

Were they ambiguous on purpose, do you think?

One outright told me so - the others, not sure, but wouldn't be surprised.

That little painted-on flower is the cutest thing ever.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree but I also feel like it's nice, in and of itself, to get away from the weight of gender expectations and all that heavy-ass bullshit

(Anonymous) 2016-08-05 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded. As much as I love being a woman, I always use an ambigious name on the Internet. It's such a relief online to have real discussions and not to deal with all the bullshit that comes with being a woman IRL.

And then you have people who assume your gender out of nowhere to the point where they insist on it.

Yeeeeeep.

I was floored the first few times I ran into male BL/bara doujinshika, but I think I kept myself from acting like an idiot. Some part of me always bought that "it's gross exploitative fantasy shit for women and ~real~ gay men wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole" horseshit that goes around every couple years, I guess.

Totally understand this. I write LGBT fiction for a living and some of the other women writing it are so creepy with any real gay men they find. It makes me so uncomfortable, although obviously it's much worse for the dudes themselves. I've found that attitude is reflected in their writing too. Lots of iffy descriptions and stereotypes.

I'm upfront about it on my blog but I think most people just casually reading my fics or looking at my art assume I'm a girl (especially as I don't draw in the "bara" style gay guys are apparently required to). would probably save a lot of time on explaining to just pretend to be a girl though.

That'll make up for a fraction of the straight girls pretending to be gay guys lol.

I've pretended to be a guy online before now so I get it, unfortunately for every reasonable person online there's about 10 not-so-reasonable ones.

I get this. I've had bad experiences in the past when (teen) girls find out that I'm a gay guy in slash fandom. Mostly just very innapropriate messages and questions (sorry I'm not going to tell you all about how it feels when my bf fucks me, random stranger on the internet!), but I also had a girl and some of her friends stalk me for a few months.

This was all ten years ago or so, though. It seems to be much better nowadays, people are a lot more chill about The Gays, where I used to feel like some sort of novelty.

Funny, I always pretend to be male in slash fandoms. I do enjoy special attention from women, believe me, it's very, very mild compared to the "special" attention from men.

I've had girls send me semi-nudes. Entirely randomly.

I was like I'm a dude in a slash fandom. Why are you assuming I am interested in female nudes at all, much less yours?!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
You really have no idea about the special attention women get from men, do you?
