Character with Good Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Opposite of yesterday's question. If there a certain character whose fans seem dissaportiantly nice, easy-going and just overall really good people to talk to?

The majority of Jody and Rowena (the supernatural characters) fans that I've talked to have been really nice

Just my fandom in general seems disproprortionately nice. I tend to frequent the Sauron, Melkor, Celebrimbor, and other Feanorian sections of the fandom more. But almost everyone in the Silmarillion fandom is great. Occasional wank, but way less than any other fandom I've ever been in.

That really depends where you are though. I think the only saving grace for Tolkien fandom is that fans often self-segregate. I don't touch the Sauron side of things and my followers don't either. When it started to invade the Silm tag, people were annoyed and there was wank.

And when Feanorian apologists show up - huge meltdown. Feanorians especially have a reputation for being wanky. If you stay in your corner, you can avoid this but if you go out into the bigger Tolkien fandom, it can be pretty brutal.

Interesting. All the Feanorian fans I follow realize most of them are awful people and love them anyway, but I don't think I've followed any strictly Feanorian fans.

Not sure why there would be wank over tagging. That seems odd to me. If it is related to the Silmarillion, doesn't it belong in that tag? I don't use that tag myself, but I do block some tags of things I don't like (modern AUs for example).

It's not wank over tagging that I saw. It was the general wank about people shipping the wrong thing.

There is definitely a subset of people who like Feanorians who make them woobies. If you're following people who also ship straight-up bad guys, then you probably will encounter the people who like the Feanorians for being messed up. But there is a not insignificant portion of fans who like to excuse the Feanorians of all wrongdoing. There was one particularly memorable wank that I remember where they said the First Kinslaying was actually the Teleri's fault and no amount of logic could dissuade them.

Ew. That's gross. Yes, I tend to follow people who like complicated characters being complicated and bad guys being bad guys. That's actually something I especially love about Tolkien, how complicated so many of his characters are.

the Rhodey fandom on tumblr is small and lovely

I know this seems biased, but one of the reasons I loved it so much was because the whole fandom was so chill. I never once saw a ship war or anything.

which fandom are you talking about?

Oh sorry, I was going by my icon: Mad Men!

Elementary fans are chill af.

And seconding Mad Men! Never once saw any arguments among fans. The only characters that got frequent hate, were disliked unanimously by everyone (Duck, Megan).
Peggy, Bob and Stan fans are usually very witty for some reason.

And not really a character since he was a real person, but Bob Ross fans are somehow always very easy to talk to.

I've also noticed that people who loved Ariel (Disney's Little Mermaid) tend to be really nice and considerate. Dunno what's up with that.

Also I've never met a Black Panther fan (as in, BP is their fav Marvel character out of everyone) who I didn't get along with.

I am very interested to hear your observations of Ariel lovers because I don't think I've ever met another in person. I've befriended plenty of Ariel haters, and their inability to accept her faults and who boil her actions down to "I traded my soul for a vagina and a man" drive me fucking nuts, so I imagine Ariel fans would be nice and considerate.

I traded my soul for a vagina and a man

God ughhh I hate this shit so much. The people who spout this shit are always low-key girlhaters. I'm not an Ariel fan myself but I will defend her actions and her rights to autonomy til the day I die.

I think Ariel-hate really hit its peak around the time Tangled was released. I actually remember this very well... Some people were unhappy that we got yet another blonde Disney princess, but the counter-argument was how Rapunzel was a good role-model and therefore hair color shouldn't matter (valid point, but people were arguing about representation, etc).
So anti-Rapunzel people argued how she wasn't a good role-model because she recklessly ran away from home.
Rapunzel stans disagreed, and to illustrate their point they pointed fingers at Ariel and went "hey look at this bitch right here! What a reckless, spoiled little girl amirite?"
The irony being here that Ariel and Rapunzel are extremely similar and both ran away from home. Most failed to realize that the only separating factor is the fact that Rapunzel was accompanied by a man. Jasmine didn't get involved, I guess due to her ethnicity (just think of the potential racewank) and because her bid for freedom failed.

I guess Ariel fans recognize Ariel's need to be independent and trying to make it in the world on her own (throwing your status and riches in hopes of achieving a life-long dream of having legs), despite the odds being stacked against her. (And realistically it shouldn't work.)
And so that, I think, breeds optimism and patience in her fans.

It's interesting that you point to Tangled's release as Ariel-wank's peak. Tangled is actually my favorite Disney movie, and I've pointed out to one of the Ariel haters I know in real life exactly how similar Ariel & Rapunzel are. It's why I like them both so much. (I've always said Tangled is basically what would happen if you'd put Ariel + Aladdin together for a film.)

The friend seemed taken aback, as if she'd never even considered that they both run away from home (one from an abusive parent and one from a parent with abusive tendencies) and that while a man entering their lives is the impetus that encourages them to actually fucking get up and go, they've both clearly longed to leave for ages.

(Also, The Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney movie prior to Tangled's release. With Aladdin & Mulan coming 2nd and 3rd. Though admittedly, child me really missed the point. I loved it so much because I wanted to be a mermaid to escape not fitting in on land.)
