What is the safest and best place to visit in Europe (outside of London) for someone interested in museums, historical sites, and trying new food. Also for someone's first trip outside of the US.

I wanted to do Tokyo but I think Europe might be a good first time experience.

I'd say Germany, but I don't think the food is that amazing here if you're not crazy for ...sliced sausage sandwiches. or bread and beer.

I really liked Belgium. I primarily stayed in Brussels, but everywhere I went to in Belgium was quite lovely.

Thanks for the suggestion! Adding it to my list to research.

I would recommend Paris, but that mostly comes from the fact that I absolutely love Paris. It's not exactly unbiased. That said... I mean, it's Paris, you know? It's Paris.

Really, though, I think most of the major European cities are going to have a good proportion of art and history and excellent food. It's not like Barcelona or Madrid or Rome or Amsterdam is going to be lacking in that kind of thing.

Italy and Spain are by the far the BEST for the actual experience, but you WILL face at least one pickpocketing attempt. That's not unsafe in my opinion since you recently did New York and DC, where wandering in the wrong neighborhood could've resulted in mugging, but it can be annoying.

France is, in my experience, a little better in that regard (though some people tell me it's just as bad? I felt like I blended in more in France though). If you could figure out New York, you can figure out Paris. Traveling in the south is lovely.

Vienna's a great city, and safe. You can do daytrips to Budapest and Prague, which are even more beautiful and have more interesting cuisines (only thing I like in Vienna is the coffee).

Amsterdam is awesome, safe, and has the Van Gogh museum. A-plus would recommend.

If you won't do London, why not Edinburgh?

P/S: If you choose Vienna and don't want to leave the country, definitely do daytrips to Hallstatt and Salzburg. Especially Hallstatt. Your breath will stop if you're at all into photography.

Definitely second Edinburgh (and you can easily hop on a train and do Glasgow too, I think it's only a ~1 hour trip. Food-wise, it really depends where you eat. If you're looking for traditional food from the country you're visiting, British food obviously has a bad reputation but some of the best restaurants I've been too were in Scotland and England and some of the classic Pub food is pretty yummy as well.

Germany is pretty safe and has a lot of museums - the food situation though... eh. It depends on what you like and where you're looking/where you are. I personally am not overly fond of German food (southern Germany's food is too heavy and pork-and-potatoes centered for my tastes and I'm not particularly fond of fish, which is something you'll get a lot of further up north) but there are great restaurants as well. I hate beer (I'm a bad German ok) but if you like beer you should like the wide selection you can get haha.

Belgium is really pretty as well (especially Bruges). And definitely worth a visit food-wise if you have a sweet tooth (same goes for Austria).

Another city I loved is Prague. I'm not entirely sure about the security situation there though, and the food... well. But it's also been a while since I've been there. Maybe it's gotten better.

Yeah, not too interested in Germany. My boss is from there so I've had a good bit of their traditional food. Not a huge fan.

But Scotland and Belgium are something I am interested in. Going to look more into them.

I tried the most new food in Finland, surprisingly. I love Helsinki everyone spoke flawless English and I got to try reindeer.

Stockholm had some really interesting museums, there's the Vasa museum which has a Viking ship preserved from the Baltic sea, the ABBA museum, the Nordic museum, one of the Nobel museums (the other is in Oslo), and I know one of my group mates went to a photography museum.

Again, I've done three tours to Europe and one the first two tours someone was pickpocketed. Once in Prague and once in Vienna. The advice there is to just be very aware of your surroundings. I never felt unsafe in any of the European cities I went to, but I'm also in and out of New York/Newark on a weekly basis.

If you want other cool experiences out of Stockholm, check out doing an overnight cruise to either Helsinki, Finland or Riga, Latvia. I did both of these and it was a really awesome way to travel. This way you travel by boat so you don't waste much day time and instead of a hotel, you're on a boat.

We left Helsinki around 5 and landed in Stockholm around 10 in the morning and we left Stockholm about the same time and I think we got to Riga around 11 AM. The ship from Helsinki to Stockholm was much larger and much nicer but it had a little bit of everything.
