Ship War Veterans

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, 'fess up. What ship wars did you fight in? Which side were you on? Did you completely embarrass yourself or to this day do you contend that you were "right"?

Let's see if we have any veterans from the biggest ship wars!

Seishirou/Subaru versus Kamui/Subaru (or Subaru/Kamui)from X/1999. S/S was the more popular (and arguably canon) of the two, so the K/Sers fought back by using what would become the precursor to the "your ship is problematic argument": S/S is abusive (and yeah lol it totally was), wrong, and Kamui should heal Subaru's woes with dick. Or butthole. Also, S/Sers were lesbian dramaqueens who didn't know what a real relationship was like.

I don't know how the role fell to me because I shipped both and even wrote an epic fic that was both S/S and K/S, probably because I was a little shit disturber, but I became the attack dog for S/S... somehow. Every time there were S/Kers on a forum talking shit the BNFs would egg me on (privately of course, so they didn't seem like the wanky ones) to go argue with them and trash talk their pairing.

I have no excuse beyond being a teenager. Sorry.

EDIT: This was the late 90s/very early 00s, for reference. I think one of my arguments even made Fandom Wank at some point.

Oh wow the ship wars had almost completely died down in my part of the X fandom,it's kinda fun hearing about what it was like in the days of old (seriously, the closest we got was someone being like 'hey what about Subaru/Fuuma and everyone else going ewwww, then a year later I was shipping it too oops)

I've always been a rarepair shipper. We don't really do ship wars.

I still to this day have strong feelings about how Cloud/Aeris is correct and Cloud/Tifa is not. First served my OTP in the trenches back in the late 90's, been sent back to the front lines several times since.

I never fought in the great ship wars, but did occasionally sit on the sidelines and poke some of the crazier Harmonians with a stick.

Bitty me had an argument supporting Zor/Nova while my friend shipped (though we didn't have that terminology then) Zor/Dana, but by the time I had internet access on a regular basis, I was in my early twenties and I guess I'd matured past the point of caring if somebody shipped something I didn't?

The closest I ever came to getting into an actual ship war was the one time I made a lot of trolly Kirk/Spock icons to make some dick angry. The only ship I've ever felt strongly enough about to fight over it is Data/Geordi, and I've never come across anyone with strong enough negative opinions that they want to fight.

Re: Ship War Veterans

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. You'd think I would have, given that I started out in HP and have spent time in SPN, MCU and ST fandoms since, but I mostly noodled around the edges with rare pairs and never really got embroiled in the big ship wars.

Though ... TOS Spock/McCoy. I will fight for that ship to my dying day, especially vs Kirk/Spock. And it isn't even that I dislike Kirk/Spock, at least not on its own merits, they clearly did love each other as well, it's just that the sheer volume of K/S shippers and the way McCoy gets relegated to the sidelines by them still makes me ... upset. Lets go with that.

I was a hardcore Harry/Hermione shipper back in the day and I took it way too seriously. I came to mys senses around the time DH came out where I saw how other shippers were talking as if it was a personal insult to them. And I loved DH apart from the relationship stuff, so I no longer felt like I was part of the ship group anymore. And plus I was older at that point and starting to realize that shipping isn't personal and there is nothing wrong with shipping what you want and nothing wrong with the authors doing what they want with their own characters. But yes, when I first got into the fandom, I was pretty hardcore. Into debating and everything.

I think that's the only war I was ever actively a part of. By the time I started joining other fandoms, I was past my ship war phase. Like, when I was into SPN, I was very into Dean/Cas, but not to the point where I wanted to battle Wincesters or took it personally that they shipped differently than me. And when I got into Buffy, I was equally into Buffy/Spike and Buffy/Angel, so the war held no interest for me.

I got caught up in the Ichigo/Rukia vs Ichigo/Orihime kerfuffle years ago, not to the extent where I went around harassing Ichimie shippers but I did get swept up in some of the dumb arguments by other Ichiruki people and went with the 'well they're clearly all stupid for supporting the wrong ship' type of thinking.

Getting away from that fandom however made me realise how dumb I was being.

Harry/Hermione shipper, and still kind of angry about those "delusional" comments (less about it not being canon and more the context of it - JKR giving an interview to a big Ron/Hermione site and openly mocking her fans was just badly done.) That debate is so over now, and I'm weirdly okay being on the losing side because it has produced a lot of H/Hr wistful fic, which I LOVE.

I took part in the AtLA ship war actually. Though I shipped Maiko, not Kataang (I preferred Aang and Toph) I was still against Zutara. Nothing really serious, I took part in some Zutara bashing discussions, but mostly just watched in the sidelines.

I was at the fringes of the Harmonian wank too. I actually started out as a Harry/Hermione shipper, before being driven out by the constant bashing of Ron, my favourite character. Later books got me to love Ron/Hermione and that was that.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I shipped both Cloud/Aeris and Cloud/Tifa (along with Cloud/Barrett and Cloud/Sephiroth), but I sided with Tifa more because Aeris was kinda catty towards Tifa.

I never liked Harry/Hermione and I loathed Draco/Hermione. There might have been a few arguments that got out of hand but in the end I don't feel bad or embarrassed for bashing Draco because of his prejudice.

Sam/Frodo are and have always been canon. Fite me h8ers.
And as much as I love Eowyn, Aragorn/Arwen were clearly meant to be together. (Thankfully the 10-year-old me was smart to recognize women being pitted against each other for the sake of romance was silly.)

House/Wilson vs House/Cuddy (and in the early days House/Cameron). I don't think I actually 'fought', I always stayed on the H/W LJ comm. But there I was pretty vehement about our ship being better and H/C being awful. It didn't help that when H/C actually became canon everyone (including H/C shippers) agreed the show became terrible.

To a lesser extent I also got pretty defensive about Remus/Sirius. Or at least I was always fairly vocal about how I didn't get Remus/Tonks. I still don't, but the fervor has definitely passed.

Luke/Callista vs Luke/Mara, waaaay back in the day. And the Jaina Solo ship wars (Zekk all the way dammit!).

I shipped Dylan/Beka pretty hard back in the day as well and I remember getting into some kerfuffles over that although I can't recall the opposing ship.

Don´t care about ship wars as a participant but seeing the NaruSaku fandom imploding when the ending hit was hilarious.

Sonny/Brenda vs. Sonny/Carly & Jax/Brenda. It was right when Brenda came back in the early/mid 2000s. It was tense times in the GH fandom.
caerbannog: Canon couple art of cute (More korrasami)

[personal profile] caerbannog 2016-08-07 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think korrasami is the only one I've been involved in? Granted, I didn't expect it to be canon. I was expecting the whole "lol they're just friends enjoy your subtext" at the end and would have been happy with that. So it being canon is a bonus! Can't wait till the comics come out.

All other fandoms...I tend to migrate through all pairings depending on my mood or I've come into the fandom too late.

*edit* Wait, I think I was loosely involved in NaruHina.

It was as big or anything, but during the heyday for Pirates of the Caribbean, I was (and am still) staunchly on the side of Sparrabeth.

Hell, I still either completely ignore the end credits scene in AWE or, if I acknowledge it, it's Jack's kid.

You know I don't think I was ever big in the ship war scene. I think one thing that held me back from it was that I shipped a lot of non-canon (usually slash) and was very aware that no, my ship will never be canon. The other factor is I'm not huge on engaging in arguments anyway.

The closest I feel I ever came to it was shipping Jack/Ianto in Torchwood, and while it did happen, I was not very pleased about how it was handled. But in truth, I kinda wandered off into a different fandom before it really came about and by the time it did, I was no longer deep in Torchwood anyway.

The Ray wars, man... they were brutal.

I was more of a bystander than a combatant. Though, my opinion was more neutral: Ray V & Fraser = awesome BFFs, Ray K/Fraser = OTP, and sometimes Ray/Ray/Fraser was pretty nifty.

Weirdly, there's still a super-bitter anon on tumblr who sends anon hate to certain people who post anything Ray K positive... and it's like, geez, the fandom has faded into its twilight years, any kind of attention these days should be welcome.
