I have a cat but I live in the city, so whenever I take him out I've either got him on a leash/harness or in a bag. Sometimes when I can't see the ground clearly (like a gravel road), I carry him in case of broken glass, etc. I'd give him cat slippers but it limits his movements.
He also knows how to navigate in the forest (and how to climb a tree in case of an emergency).
You can take cats outdoors but you have to be responsible and vigilant, just like with dogs.
