Cats and dementia

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So people that have cats are kinda obsessed with them, and I notice people with cats or who have previously owned cats get irrationally angry whenever there is any criticism of the furry little bastards. They get particularly angry when asked to keep them inside so as to stop shitting on other people's herb beds, or to stop killing both wild birds at the feeder or backyard poultry. They even get angry at the thought of confining them in coyote or lynx areas where free roaming cats are basically lunch. Not only that, they spend thousands of pounds and dollars on cat toys and cat accessories.

I think that owning or living with cats causes some sort of dementia. I'm going to call it "Cat acquired narcissism by proxy". I need to find a methodology and a sponsor for some experiments to get me this result. Hopefully it'll eventually mean that cat owners are barred from public policy talks whenever the subject of culling feral cats (any cat out of doors) is brought up for implementation.

1/10. Too rambly; got bored and went to snuggle cats instead.

It's called 'toxoplasmosis' and it's completely real.

do cats get dementia tho

Re: Cats and dementia

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they smart enough to get demented in the first place?

Re: Cats and dementia

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I was hoping that would be what this thread was about.

My cat is almost 19. He was already elderly when I got him, so I have no reference for if his behavior is just physical or cognitive decline. He's uninterested in play and he has toileting problems, but he doesn't get lost or cry for no reason (he cries with reason). He's probably just got old bones.

nayrt - poor thing :( A cat I used to babysit was about 20 also, and the little guy was just not all there. But he wasn't in pain or anything, and he ate okay, but couldn't really control his bowel movements at all and never seemed to notice that he'd walk around covered in poop. The family would diligently clean him off daily. He was very beloved, but clearly very old.

Yeah, I knew someone whose dog got dementia towards the end of his life. I see no reason a cat wouldn't have something similar. I mean, heck, octopuses are infamous for their mental decline and behavioral changes when they're old, and they're far more afield from us biologically!

Responsible cat owners only have indoor cats tho

Re: Cats and dementia

I politely disagree.

Farms and barns especially benefit from outdoor cats.

I have a cat but I live in the city, so whenever I take him out I've either got him on a leash/harness or in a bag. Sometimes when I can't see the ground clearly (like a gravel road), I carry him in case of broken glass, etc. I'd give him cat slippers but it limits his movements.
He also knows how to navigate in the forest (and how to climb a tree in case of an emergency).

You can take cats outdoors but you have to be responsible and vigilant, just like with dogs.

I'd agree with ariakas that city cats should be kept indoors, though. They hunt the birds that I've got a bird-bath and bird-feeder for (and had to discontinue), they defecate in my lawn and/or garden, and more than once I've seen the poor dumb cat who didn't successfully negotiate traffic, and it just makes me angry that their owners didn't look after it.

Serious reply for troll baity post: I've never found a cat lover more irrational than a cat hater. Cat haters are the most irrational assholes on the planet. I've literally never been proven wrong on this, and I say this as someone who has a dog.

Man I'm so sad my building doesn't allow pets, I want a cat :(

Re: Cats and dementia

Dog owners are just as bad, if in different ways. I travel for work too much to kerp a dog (or cat, for that matter) and I've actually had a dog lover tell me I shoukd "rethink my priorities" and other people imply I made bad life choices. Like my number one priority in life shoukd be owning a dog? If you don't want a dog, no matter the reason, you are somehow a terrible and untrustworthy person who hates all animals. I've watched people get their first dog and turn into crazy people who only buy dog-themed stuff and build their whole identy around dogs. It can be more extreme than when people have a baby. At least parents aren't buying baby rattle-shaped keychains just "Because I have a baby!" especially not as the kid grows up.

A good 5/10 on this one.

Re: Cats and dementia

As someone who loves pretty much every animal (I'd love a pet pangolin), but slightly prefers cats to dogs (because I don't have the time to take proper care of a dog, but may be in a place where I can have a couple of cats within the next year, dogs are wonderful but need more supervision/human interaction to keep from getting fucked up than cats do)--you had me until you equated feral cats with outdoor cats and brought up culling. Sometimes culling ferals is the only thing to do, especially in poor rural areas where there aren't enough people to do trap, spay/neuter, release programs and there's lots of vulnerable wildlife--this also applies to dogs, btw. But culling people's pets because they happen to be outside=troll, asshole, nutjob, or some combo of the three.

There's currently an injured feral cat under my house. I'm leaving it alone and hoping it will go away.

I mean, maybe their anger is actually rational because you go up to them and start a tirade about your cat hatred?

I think your cause and effect in this situation are mixed up. You seem to think cats cause dementia that in turn causes owner to not curb their cat's behaviour.

I think it is more that people with dementia who happen to own cats fail at curbing behaviour, therefore let their cats run wild.

The cats aren't responsible for having bad owners, bad owners are responsible for being bad owners.
