Well, I would say that criticism before the movie even comes out is probably due to sexism rather than what's actually on the screen, know what I'm sayin'?

There was also a lot of nostalgic bitterness. I mean, it's hard to remake a Bill Murray movie. I loved the original Ghostbusters, and I loved this too.

I'd probably be like FUCK THIS if someone remade Four Weddings and a Funeral so I do get it, but Ghostbusters is a toy-selling action comedy franchise and it's gonna happen.

Yeah, I mean, it's not like any movie with a bunch of male leads has EVER been criticized as 'this will suck' before it came out! EVERYONE THOUGHT BATMAN VS SUPERMAN WOULD BE GENIUS.

Yes...if you're getting pissy with a simple cast announcement beyond "why can't hollywood make original properties" (which is a good point) - there's no work yet to have a valid or invalid criticism presented.

AYRT the answers are obviously cashing in on familiarity and also making bank with toys and swag.

I prefer original stuff too (Stranger Things has callbacks and is derivative, but it's a new story) but the level of vile vitriol aimed at the Ghostbusters reboot and its cast was off the charts.

I liked the original Red Dawn, and I didn't bother with the remake, but there's a difference between, "Sounds meh," and "THIS IS A TRAVESTY."

Reboots/Remakes don't erase the original from existence, after all.

I don't give a single shit about pointless remakes except on the basis of how much it costs to make them.

Are there remakes that aren't pointless in your mind? Just curious.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not them, but some remakes are pure milking while others have a lot of love put into them and end up being really good, like BSG.

The criticism before the movei came out was mostly about the trailer and reactions to it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
And considering that trailers are supposed to show the best part of a film and make you want more, the trailer being as crappy as it was definitely created a point for legitimate criticism.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
But it wasn't that awful???? Like it wasn't good, but really? Worst trailer ever? Reeeaaally?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Don't underestimate nerd rage. I was in the Star Wars fandom for the backlash against George Lucas for the prequels. It has nothing to do with sexism, and everything to do with taking something people are emotionally attached to (rightly or wrongly) and doing a bad job with it.

Similarly, there was a lot of rage about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman. A LOT.

Are there a few sexist critics out there? Sure. But to say it's systematic or that's ALL of it is, well, that's ridiculous. There's way too many examples of the same thing happening to male entertainers in beloved existing worlds.

That's the impression I had.

I admit, most of what I heard about it came from YouTube commentators who were not reacting favourably to both that trailer and the shit-storm that happened in it's comment section.
I will mention though that some of those same Youtubers later, on watching the movie, basically said something to the effect of "Not a great movie, but it was watchable and entertaining".

People found the preview sub-par and commented such on the YouTube video. Sony went through and deleted legitimate criticism to pretend that the only reason anybody could dislike it was sexism. Essentially they fabricated an issue in order to weasel out of any negative press.

Even deleting comments doesn't explain why the trailer got an unholy amount of dislikes. Like it wasn't great, but it wasn't AWFUL, either. I'd say the sexist complaint still stands.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
People don't like being called names, that's why. The spin of it 'all being sexist complainers' caused a massive backlash.

"Hey, all you fans of the original! WHAT BIGOTED ASSHOLES YOU ARE. Now come watch the film!"

Of course they got a lot of dislikes.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
You're still assuming that gender had not only anything to do with it but that it was the primary factor. People were opposed to a remake anyway, regardless of who was in it. And being told that they had to like it or else they were sexist honestly doesn't sit well with audiences.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I think that - regardless of any feelings about it or what side you're on, totally don't care about that - the whole online controversy over Ghostbusters probably had almost no effect, positive or negative, on its sales. I think people who wanted to see it mostly saw it, and people who didn't mostly didn't.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
DA. That's entirely possible. Just because something is huge on twitter doesn't mean the average person knows or gives a shit.

Youtube comments aren't the place for legit criticism, lbh

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
My issue with the claims that all the hate is primarily against remakes is that there wasn't such an instant and fervid problem with any other equally unnecessary remakes. THIS one got the wildly down-voted trailer, amid all of the other mediocre remakes, reboots, and sequels filling Hollywood. The trailer wasn't great but it honestly wasn't THAT MUCH WORSE than a billion other trailers.

So when someone says "I just hate all remakes, it's not about the female casting" I kinda have to ask "okay but were you also this mad about the third new Star Trek movie? Or the Power Rangers movie? Or the two TMNT movies?"

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
I bet there were people just as angry about the Star Trek reboot as Ghostbusters. Just different people than the people angry about Ghostbusters (+ disastrous response to initial criticism). I don't have a huge attachment to either, so I don't care, but I remember some Trekkies being pretty pissed about the reboot plus making it darker than the original series, which was mostly hopeful.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-14 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

iirc, though, the outrage over the Star Trek reboot came after people had watched the film and (some of them) said, "This really doesn't feel like Star Trek to me." Whereas the outrage over the Ghostbusters reboot came as soon as it was announced that it would have an all-female team, long before the film was even made.

The Ben Hur remake came out the same week as GB here in my country.

Given that the original Ben Hur actually won Oscars and it's considered a real cinematic classic, I am wondering where there weren't people picketing the red carpet, since OBVIOUSLY this would be a bigger travesty than remaking GB.

But nope, not a peep. Hell, not even commentaries on internet about how remaking one of the greatest movies of all time might have been a bad idea.

Ghostbusters remake with women? Kill it with fire even before the first trailer hits the net.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-08-15 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's still a leap to claim that it's based in sexism though. And if people don't like a trailer, say so, and get told that they MUST be sexist because reasons, that's going to stoke some fires.
