Yeah... you're both looking too hard. It's really easy to create confirmation bias when so many of the characters are actually ambiguous. Some people (including me) don't think Amethyst looks black. Then again, some people think she and Opal both do. Ruby, Sapphire, and Jasper are all pretty maybe/maybe not. You're just choosing which ones you want to be "black" so you can find something negative and stereotypical about them.

Amethyst looks a lot like white women I know. Ruby and Sapphire look like racially ambiguous cartoons. I expect most white people read all of them as white-looking, or maybe "mixed."

Garnet is the one that looks "black."

Words cannot describe how much I viscerally loathe the smug, small, sniveling, hateful, unhelpful, accusing, snide, passive-aggressive, lazy, whining, putrid brand of SJ-oriented fiction analysis exemplified in that title and blurb. It is actively undermining and diametrically opposed to all thoughtful, helpful, active, constructive SJ fiction analysis that seeks to point out crummy patterns and themes and suggests better alternative approaches or ways to fix those bad patterns. Just reading that blurb and title made me physically recoil in disgust.

Having just read the article, I'm not sure what to think. I don't think all of her points are invalid, but than there are some critiques that totally fall falt on its ass imo. I couldn't help but roll my eyes a little when she started harping on the fact that Garnet being the "man" in the fusion dance with Pearl was proof that the show is trying to make her ugly and masculine. Like wtf?

Than again since I'm white, maybe I'm just missing something, idk.

Rebecca Sugar said that Steven is meant to be read as mixed, though...? In the case of the show he's half-human and half-gem, of course, but she based Steven's racial coding on her and her brother's experiences as half-Jewish folks.

But then, the left appears to be getting more and more anti-Semitic by the day, doesn't it. :/ (Speaking as a lefty.)
