Talk about the fair!

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-08-21 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Making a post about the fair because I'm at the fair, and I'm waiting for a friend to come back with her food.

Tell me about your fair! Does your state or county have an annual fair? Outside the US, what regional delineation do they do fairs for? When are they? What do you eat? What do you do?

I'm at the Indiana State Fair and this is the last day of the annual ~3 week run. There is a ton of agriculture-related competition and I love to go around and see the animals, especially the horses and pigs. I had an Italian sausage and a lemon snake-up and now I'm gonna have an elephant ear. We might do the midway but that's expensive so I'm not sure. (It's also the most fun after dark!)

We have shows. The biggest is the Royal Easter Show. There's an annual show in my home town. Wood chopping competitions, horribly unhealthy food, lots of screaming children, the crazy guy with the pet venomous snake, fireworks. It hasn't changed since I was a kid. I'm one of those weird people that even likes the smell of show.

That sounds awesome!! I love snakes but...venomous? Has it been defanged or...?

No it's still capable of biting him. He says it hasn't. He hand raised the damn thing. I think he has a couple of them actually that he will handle like pythons. He does a show with the bigger ones though. They put hessian around the horse yard and he lets them loose so people can see them strike at him. They sometimes try to get over the fence. He has one of the fattest tiger snakes I've ever seen. It's gorgeous.

You can't really defang a snake, btw. They get new ones in. You can sew their mouths shut, and even then they'll still get you if they can work a fang through their own skin. Their jaws are super flexy. Don't ever believe anyone that says their snake is defanged or safe if it's venomous.

ew ew ew you can do what to a snake???? D: why would you do that?

(I'm not even a fan of defanging tbh, but I just...thought there had to be something if he's handling them unprotected! Do snakes really recognize individuals? They're not dogs. Even raising one by hand wouldn't seem to make it safe to me)

The sewing? It's not common here. There are people who earn a living in third world countries by performing with snakes still. It's not a very nice thing to think about, but it happens.

They only bite to hunt or if they feel threatened, so you're not likely to get nipped playfully like you are with a dog (to use your comparison). I guess if you raise them and handle them gently then they're not threatened by you? He's a chill snake. He seems very relaxed with being handled.

It's not safe, but it is probably one of the less deadly snakes he has in his collection - a red belly. He'd be in pain if it bit him but he'd probably live. His brown snake and death adder are more dangerous to him even though he takes more precautions handling them.

I didn't mean like playfully nipping, I meant like a dog has a pack mentality and can recognize and learn to trust individuals. I'm not sure a snake's intelligence extends that far, so I'd consider them a threat to anyone even if they "hand-raised" them.

It's cool that it's working out for this guy though! I'd never do it. I love handling non-venomous snakes, and love looking at any and all snakes; they're seriously among my very favorite animals. But I don't think I'd put my safety on the line for what this guy is doing! I guess I'm not the "adrenaline rush from risky behavior"-loving type person.

Local Indy resident here! It's just a beautiful day to be at the fair isn't it? I went on Friday when it was $5 admission. Honestly, I think I just love walking around the whole place and people watching. I saw a little bit of the Parkour and BMX racing but I was mostly annoyed at the announcer. I felt like I just wanted to watch the guys do their stuff not have a guy talking all the time (kind of like when you watch the olympics I guess).

Several years ago they had a duck racing contest. I thought that was so weird enough to be enjoyable!

Food wise I always have to get the grilled cheese sandwich, swiss on rye. Seriously the best grilled cheese in the area! And I get the fruit twister (I ask to have it made with splenda). I tried the fried pork sticks which were tasty. Pity that the bison cheesesteak egg rolls were sold out... I was almost tempted to get the deep fried resess peanut butter cups but to get 3 pieces for $6? No, not worth it.

High five fellow Indy resident!

I really should have gone Friday. I didn't know admission was $5! And a lot of the animals were gone today. :( We did see some pigs, including the piglets which are my favorite, and some super cute goats. Some of the goats were putting their hooves up on the edges of their pens and getting pets from the passers-by.

The fairs in Oklahoma don't have candy apples. They are the worst. :(

We have candy apples but I didn't get any because those feel more like a fall food to me.

Does your fair have any desserts you particularly like?

So I'm in NJ and honestly, it's all about the Sussex County Fair (which is sort of a state fair now but everyone knows it as the Sussex County Fair) We'd go for the demolition derby as kids and my uncle used to race his mud truck in it.

There's a state fair in July at Metlife (Giants) Stadium but I've never gone.

I LOVE FUNNEL CAKE AND DEEP FRIED OREOS.

I did the South Carolina State Fair, which is in October, and had a blast looking at all the sand art and flower art.

I've never been to a demolition derby! Apparently our fair has one but I haven't seen it.

Funnel cake is very good but I am all about the elephant ears myself :)

I overdosed on state fairs as a kid due to geographical proximity/convenience and now I find them boring. People think I'm weird for not wanting to go to my state's state fair and they list all thge things they think are great about it, but those are all the same things my home state's state fair had. I've already tried everything on a stick! I'm done!

Aw! That stinks. To me it's a once-a-year event but if I went a whole lot the appeal would definitely be less, I think.

I try to go to the North Carolina State Fair every year. It starts around the middle of October. I go for the crafts, garden area, freebies, and animals.
I don't usually go to the county fairs.
There are some local festivals I am looking forward to visiting. The International Folk Festival during the 4th weekend in September- I love being able to try the food from different countries, most booths have little sampler plates for under $2. There is folk music and dancing, traditional crafts, and more.
There is A Dickens Holiday on Black Friday that turns downtown Fayetteville into a Victorian era festival. Horse-drawn carriages go up & down Hay Street, a good 60% of the attendees attempt to dress like they did in 1843, and most of the shops decorate their window displays. There is a gingerbread house decorating competition, people play instruments or sing carols, and there is a Santa dressed up Victorian style. There is a candlelight procession down Hay Street to the Market House and usually they have fireworks afterwards. Last year I collected a lot of the used candles (they were generally 95% there and people were going to just throw them away), and turned them into Christmas gifts (tea cup candles). I hope to get a group together to collect the 'trash' candles this year.

Those all sound awesome!!!! I wish there were more crafts at our fair. There are some leatherwork stands and such...maybe there are more that I haven't seen. It's a big fair. I did buy some pants from a clothing stand, but I'm not sure if they were "craft" or not.

I seriously want to go to all of those ones you mentioned, they sound so cool.

I'm in Iowa, of course we have a state fair. I love the animal pavilion, and the flowers and quilts in Varied Industries. I always have to eat a funnel cake. And of course you have to see the butter cow...and whatever else has been sculpted in butter; this year it's the Enterprise and crew in honor of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek:

People sculpt things out of butter???

Dammit, I can't open the link. Still haven't figured out how to highlight things on this phone...

Re: Talk about the fair!

I'm sorry, I somehow got an extra hyphen into "butter"--that's probably why it's not working.

And yes, the Butter Cow is an institution here. It's kept in a refrigerated showcase in Varied Industries. For years, it was always done by the same sculptor--the "Butter Cow Lady"--who recently passed on the job to a successor. After the fair, the butter is donated.

Re: Talk about the fair!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
See if you have better luck with this link:

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/picture-gallery/news/2016/08/09/17-photos-butter-star-trek-tribute-at-state-fair/88454442/

And I was wrong about some of my facts: the showcase for the Butter Cow is in the Ag building, and the butter isn't donated--it's frozen and reused from year to year. Apparently, the same butter can be used for up to 10 years, which is a good thing because just the cow takes about 600 pounds of butter.

Nah it's not the link itself. It's that when I'm on my phone, I can't highlight entire links using my touch screen (or if I can, I haven't figured out how to do it yet) and I was on my phone when I read this comment yesterday.

Now I'm at a computer though, and wow! That is seriously impressive! It looks kinda gross too while they're sculpting but the end products are super clean-looking. I love it.
