Interview/Job Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a last minute interview. I applyed for the job yesterday, got a call to schedule the interview today, and the interview is tomorrow. The thing that is worrying me (other than having to quick call my boss and lie about an appointment) is that I cannot find that much information on the place I am interviewing for. The place has a nice looking website, but a lot of the links don't work. And I tried googling the person I am going to interview with and I am finding nothing (no facebook or other social media stuff). I did find the person had trademarked the companies name back in the early 2000s and the company is at least in an official looking place that has other reputable companies in it, but it's puzzling me why I cannot find much about the company.

What do you all think?

That is pretty shady. Does depend on what industry it's in though.

It's for a legal assistant position. There are other smaller firms also in the same building.

Suuuuuuper shady.

NAYRT: Since it is a legal place it could just be that they don't give out much for privacy reasons. Still weird, though. I would be very careful.

Maybe google legal cases involving that firm?

They may just be super small. I worked for a firm that was called "[Last Name] Lawyers" and only had lawyer, singular. Their software and website were all outdated as hell too. It's an industry where you don't need to advertise and pull in a lot of new clients if you already have corporate accounts or a steady flow of work being outsourced to you from different aid groups that get government money to provide representation to people. We shared a larger office floor with two other firms. Very weird experience coming from a larger firm to that but the money was good.

Trust your instincts. If it feels dodgy, then it's probably dodgy. I wouldn't write it off before you even meet them (in daylight, with people nearby just in case).

I don't think that's shady, just frustrating. Given that you don't have much to go on, I think it's okay to stick to slightly more general questions like "What are your expectations for a legal assistant? What are typical tasks that a legal assistant in your firm would handle? What is the firm culture like?"

And keep your eyes and ears peeled the whole time you're there so you can figure out a bit more about it.

I found this list of ways to tell. One of its suggestions is to check scam lists. http://careerminer.infomine.com/scammers-are-constantly-on-the-prowl-how-to-spot-a-scam-job-from-a-real-job/

Definitely sounds shady and it sounds like it's set off alarms for you. I'd avoid.

The more I think about it, the more I think maybe you just shouldn't go. Given that this is in the same building as other businesses, I think you're probably safe, but... yeah, I don't know that you should go. Forbes also has an article on this. http://www.forbes.com/sites/lizryan/2014/11/21/invited-to-a-job-interview-read-this-first/2/#49bfccff4d5f They note that you should definitely trust your gut.

Please, please, please bring someone with you. They can wait in the lobby if needed.

If the building has other legit practices, go into one of those (preferably the one closest to where you need to be) and ask where place X is. If they know nothing and seem like they've never heard of place X, or don't know anything about the person you're supposed to meet, I'd get the hell out.

Actually, this is a great suggesting. Yes, anon. Do that.

It could just be that they're a small business with a very outdated website, as has been suggested, but there's something suspicious about this.

Very shady. Even if it's a small company without much visibility you should be able to find a working website and some basic information on the interviewer. Absolutely don't go alone.

Businesses in my industry don't rely on websites much to get business (we have them, but they don't always provide profiles of employees or a lot of up-to-date details) and therefore we tend not to shell out the $$ to keep the less important info current or make it look prettier. My old company's website was just something one of my co-workers threw together in his spare time and no one had time to update it very often. My current company's website is flashier, but you're not going to find people's names on there and the example projects we list are kind of old because clients usually ask us not to talk about really recent/on-going stuff.

We're not lawyers, though, so I dunno about law offices. I can imagine if it's a small place, they just may not have the html skills, time, or money to make a pretty website.

Also, my old company was in this ugly building in an industrial area and I'm sure it looked super shady to people who'd never been there before. The other businesses in that building were all legit and kind of interesting. We were all there just because the rent was cheap.

Still, I like the suggestion of bringing someone with you and having them wait outside or in the lobby.

It may be the industry. I know the company I work for now, I tried to look them up but the information was fairly outdated. It worked out in my favor, so I think you should at least interview, because that's not a guarantee they'll hire you and you can always turn down the job offer if the interview makes you uncomfortable.
