When I read this secret I thought, oh please, how could it be worse than 50 Shades of Grey? Then I read the first few pages of the book on Amazon. I cannot believe how mannered it is. There's no way I would read a whole book written like this.

SA

Not that I could read more than a chapter of 50 Shades either. But that writer was just bad in the sense that I'm not sure EL James knows how to write. Chuck Wendig obviously knows how to write. He just doesn't know how to relax.

For me, it's also about knowing your audience. He wasn't writing for fans of Chuck Wendig. He was writing for fans of Star Wars. Going experimental/being so about his own personal style for the masses of Star Wars fans and expecting a good result? Not very likely.

What do you mean by mannered? I can't tell if that's a typo or a description I just haven't heard before.

"(of a writer, artist, or artistic style) marked by idiosyncratic mannerisms; artificial, stilted, and overelaborate in delivery."

This perfectly describes his writing in Aftermath. As I was reading the few pages online I kept wanting to say to him: Dude, stop trying so hard to sound weird and cool, it's not working for you.

That's Wendig for you. "I’m so angry, I’m actually just peeing bees. If you’re wondering where all these bees came from? I have peed them into the world."

Interesting. I haven't really heard that. So basically trying for idiosyncratic but being stilted and try-hardy about it.

Yep.
