Things you thought were more innocent than they are...

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
OR, conversely, things you thought were dirty and they weren't.

Thought was innocent: "Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker." I thought it was... way way way more innocent than it is. I'm glad I never used that one.

Also, way back in the day I thought "cyber" meant "chat online." Since everything internet related was called "cyber" back then. So I asked a girl if she wanted to cyber and was asked if I was gay; another called me a pervert. My friend and I still didn't figure it out until she accepted a guy's offer to cyber... let's just say we turned off the computer very fast.

Thought was dirty: Not dirty per se, but I always took "brother from another mother" to mean brother from another woman the father had been with, not "we're like brothers."

...It took me until right now to realize that probably didn't mean a single person getting __________ consensually by themselves. Ew.

I think down to personal interpretation

The title of the Ogden Nash poem (Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.) is Reflections on Ice-Breaking, so take that as you will.

Not so much that I thought it was innocent and it wasn't, because with Nanny Ogg the baseline assumption is that nothing is innocent, but it took me the better part of three years to figure out why "The Wizard's Staff Has A Knob On The End" was a dirty song. Um. I'm really, really, really bad at innuendo?

I've never heard the song, so maybe I'd have to hear the lyrics, but that sounds perfectly innocent to me as well!

As I recall from Discworld, there are no lyrics. The title of the song is referenced now and again, but Terry Pratchett really doesn't do overtly sexual in his writing. He much prefers the nod and a wink references that you might just miss if you aren't looking for them.

Also the 'Hedgehog Song'. There's a reason why 'the hedgehog can never be buggered at all'.

I didn't realize "do I know you from somewhere?" was a pick up line until after I'd been asking people that for years.

Oh. I never realized.

In your defense, it doesn't have to be.

I used to get the words quirky and kinky mixed up. I thought they both meant quirky.

I get that. I thought "twat" meant the same thing as "twit."

Nope.

My SIL's mom got "fetish" and some very common word mixed up--I forget which tho. :P

When we were, like, 15, my childhood best friend and I invented a word that was crazy + kinky, but I can't remember what it was.

There's a verse in the old blues song, "Preachers Blues," that goes:

He will eat your chicken
He will eat your pie
He will lead your wife out
On the sly

For years, I thought the third line was, "He will eat your wife out," and I gotta admit I was disappointed to learn I was wrong.

I've never encountered that song, but tbh it seems plausible that that lyric is *supposed* to sound like "he will eat your wife out." Getting stuff past the censors, etc.

O-Town's "Liquid Dreams"

Because I was 7 and an idiot.

Also, I don't know if I'd heard O-Town's "Every Six Seconds" when I was a kid, but I did end up sending a YouTube video of that song to a college professor after a class where he'd discussed how frequently men think about sex.

Some guy asked me if I shaved in a chat once and I said yes thinking he meant my legs. My nosy ass brother saw what I was doing and asked if I knew what the guy meant, my brother did not fail to inform me when I said no.
