We had a thunderstorm today and there was a crack of thunder that sounded like the house next door had exploded. My poor dog hasn't stopped shaking and that was hours ago. He's cuddled up to me right now and he won't go to sleep and he cries if I break contact with him. My SO has to hold him like a baby and stand in the doorway when I go to the toilet or else he starts howling.

...Might be time to ask for a bit of a sedative from the vet. That kind of extreme anxiety (in humans as well as pets!) often really does need to be medicated or it can spark a sort of positive feedback loop that may lead to a disorder down the road.

Our dog is terrified of fireworks; we routinely dose her with "doggie valium" around the fourth of July.

(Two of the cat will startle a little, but the third grew up right next to Disneyland so she is used to it.)
