What characters do you love seeing beat up?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, not like...dead or dying or anything, but with some bruises and a little blood. I can't be the only one.

Harry Kim, Adric, Miles O'Brien, Janeway.

Oh and Maria Hill.

I love seeing any of those get smacked around. For different reasons of course. I didn't include Neelix because you stipulated not viscerally ritually disemboweled, just a little battered and bruised.

Aren't all disembowelings intrinsically visceral?

Neelix's would be extra so.

Janeway is an awesome answer. She was always greater when she was covered in a layer of blood, sweat and grime.

ALL OF THEM????

but for real, the sweet spot is when they're not quite the *nice* characters (which sort of encompasses moral/optimistic/outgoing/sweet ?), but they're not villains at all: the morally conflicted, bitter, stoic, reserved, but intensely loyal/trying hard characters, I guess.

And, always men. For whatever Freudian reason.

For example, in the MCU I love most characters, but Tony, Bucky, and sometimes Bruce are the ones I'd want to see hurt. I love Steve, but he's too traditionally clean-cut and sweet for me to enjoy seeing him hurt, Nat is a lady, Sam is, again, too straightforwardly good and nice, etc. Tony's a bit of an asshole, Bucky's got mad moral conflicts and checks the reserved/bitter boxes, and the same goes for Bruce, though he ends up a little too close to the sort of clean-cut box for me to get as excited about him getting hurt.

???? An analysis?

SA

Rhodey is too good and puts up with too much for me to want to see him dragged into this nonsense. Give Rhodey health, strength, and success in a career that really matters to him.

Usually characters who are the subjects in redemption stories. Of course, they have to have been responsible for some spilled blood themselves, whether directly or indirectly.

Castiel. Goddamn, he has such a pretty face. I like seeing him beat up after he's just totally kicked someone's ass to kingdom come.

Matt Murdock. Ditto. I watched the series half because of him writhing around half naked and injured.

Spock, too. I just think the green bruises look cool. Also he's my fave no stealing

I'm seconding Matt Murdock. That ninja beat down he got late season 1 (you know the one) did things to me, anon. Things I never knew I could feel.

Leonard H. McCoy (TOS) and John Childermass (JS&MN) are my first instinctive reactions, and I think that's because they both have that thing in canon of 'stand there and grimly take it while practically bleeding defiance'. I'll also throw in Harold Finch (POI), Nyota Uhura (TOS), Klaus Wulfenbach (Girl Genius), Eve Baird (Librarians), Wonder Woman (DC), Susan Ivanova (B5), James Norrington (PotC), Merry & Pippin (LotR, I blame Two Towers), Eowyn (LotR, blaming Pelinnor Fields), Dr Schreber (Dark City), and probably a bunch more I'm forgetting. I have a thing for a) amazing badasses getting bloody, and b) the grim, fiercely defiant endurance of pain. So ... mix of warriors, people who are defiant in the face of capture/threat/interrogation, and the walking wounded here.

Steve Rogers. I just love how stoic he reacts towards pain. My favorite kind of character to see beat up.

Agreed. In a sick way he's beautiful when he suffers.

I love that little ground punch he does to make himself get up.

100% the best thing. I loved the fight scenes in Winter Solider and Civil War because even though Steve has super strength it doesn't mean he can't feel pain, and those fights looked like they *hurt*. There was real effort and exertion. And some quality angsty bruising and brawling :D

I'm in (or was in) a lot of old fandoms based around characters canonically getting the shit kicked out of them; The Professionals, Man from UNCLE, Starsky and Hutch. I get sad when I read fic in a fandom where fighting and injury isn't common :D

Yes to Starsky & Hutch. It happened so frequently to both of them too.

The Penguin from Gotham. Season one was a great fun time for me.

Uh, I love fics that explore the torture bits of the stories of Celebrimbor and Maedhros. Also Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, and Thor. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Sirius Black, Buffy Summers, Spike, G'Kar, John Sheridan, Susan Ivanova, Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir. Actually, pretty much any character. I like torture fics. I like fics and things where characters get beat up.
