1. YES. I would love a revival of that kind of music, too. Groups like Franz Ferdinand and the Killers and others of that sort have kinda kickstarted some of that, but it'd be great to see some of that expanded upon further.

2. Yay for Oingo Boingo. I'd definitely love to see more bands like them pop up, for sure. They were fun.

YES!

Oingo Boingo were good but they're kind of indicative with the problem with a lot of New Wave music, viz, it is super dorky

Which isn't a bad thing in and of itself obviously, but

The 80's sound is coming back and it makes me wonder how many actual 80's groups "kids these days" might be into if they game them a shot.

Me too!

This is the music of my middle school/high school years and I listen to it all the time.

It would be great to have a revival. There is only so much EDM I can take.

Have you heard Gary Numan's recent stuff? He got super creepy--you can still tell it's new wave, but there's a creeping oppression to it that reminds me of Alice Cooper.

It's called Darkwave.

No joke, New Wave music is still one of my favorite genres, and IMO the only redeeming pop culture element of the 1980s. Everything else was dire.

BUT --here's the thing-- a big part of what made the music so great was that it was an honest, organic progression from other movements (punk, disco, etc.) which themselves were organic, and it was unique and cutting edge. Of course, not everyone thought it was cool, but the people who were fans of New Wave bands...like... actually did think it was cool. They weren't doing it to make their friends laugh, they weren't being being ~ironic, they were being genuine.

I don't think New Wave could come back today and be genuine and have genuine fans. We're not the same culture, we're too self-conscious, too self-referential, too edgy, too lame.

I'm pretty sure I was being totally ironic when I was singing "Whip it, whip it good!" and moshing around with my buddies. Thanks for the vote of confidence, though.

Did you legit like that song, though?

I wasn't a huge fan of Devo's stuff, no. It was a little simplistic for me. Fun to dance to, though. I enjoyed it.

(Are you implying we somehow ironically don't like the music we enjoy listening to now? I'm confused I admit.)

Yay OB/new wave secret! <3 And yes, I would love a return, especially with new remix technology. It would be awesome.

New Wave hasn't died completely! There's lots of groups that capture different aspects of it nicely. Off the top of my head there's These New Puritans and The New Division (who I love). I'm sure there's tons more that have that quirky 80s alt-rock thing going on, but I'm more into synthwave myself so I don't have recs. :(
