No joke, New Wave music is still one of my favorite genres, and IMO the only redeeming pop culture element of the 1980s. Everything else was dire.

BUT --here's the thing-- a big part of what made the music so great was that it was an honest, organic progression from other movements (punk, disco, etc.) which themselves were organic, and it was unique and cutting edge. Of course, not everyone thought it was cool, but the people who were fans of New Wave bands...like... actually did think it was cool. They weren't doing it to make their friends laugh, they weren't being being ~ironic, they were being genuine.

I don't think New Wave could come back today and be genuine and have genuine fans. We're not the same culture, we're too self-conscious, too self-referential, too edgy, too lame.

I'm pretty sure I was being totally ironic when I was singing "Whip it, whip it good!" and moshing around with my buddies. Thanks for the vote of confidence, though.

Did you legit like that song, though?

I wasn't a huge fan of Devo's stuff, no. It was a little simplistic for me. Fun to dance to, though. I enjoyed it.

(Are you implying we somehow ironically don't like the music we enjoy listening to now? I'm confused I admit.)
