"Protecting victims" as a must-do priority in fandom. This is why people get away with doxxing, suicide encouragement, and spreading rumors like "this author is a pedophile" because they write for a ship with an age gap.

Not sure I understand what you're getting at here.

What should we be prioritizing instead?

Common sense.

I think the quotes around protecting victims implies it's not really about protecting victims. More like using imaginary victims as an excuse to hurt people, because a victim possibly existing somewhere that must be protected at all costs means you're fighting the good fight by attacking someone else, sometimes someone who hasn't hurt anyone even.

The assumption that victims are responsible for avoiding things and spaces likely to contain things that will trigger them, instead of wiping the internet of those things because a victim MIGHT find one.

Not creating new victims should be one priority imo

They're not protecting victims though. They're attacking people for the "glory" of going after a self made "bad guy".

How confident are you that this is the case? And how general are you willing to make your "they" here? Are we talking, like, 70% of people involved? 90%? 100%? Let's get specific with our accusations.

Re: Current trends that annoy you

100%. I believe no one that makes accusations against someone else on the internet unless they have real life, physical proof.

And if you disagree with me, you are a racist rapist and I am going to tell everyone.

NAYRT

omg dude calm down. Protecting victims=good thing. Doxxing etc.=bad thing. Whatever justifications led to the bad thing, blaming the good thing is stupid; clearly the people doxxing people and accusing people of pedophilia aren't really investing in protecting victims at all, whatever you say.

But you have to preserve that distinction in the critique itself. Because if you don't, then it's just a critique of the good thing. And gets understood as one, and used as one. I really think that. You have to be careful to maintain the distinction.

DA

Did you miss the quotes around "protecting victims" meaning it's not actually about protecting victims? The rest of us appear to have understood it...

Re: Current trends that annoy you

It is unclear, when you put quotes around "protecting victims", whether you mean "people who do bad things while pretending to be protecting victims" or "the so-called claim that people care about protecting victims, which is really about something else"

I, personally, would understand putting quotes around protecting victims to mean something closer to the second - to mean that the person is calling into question the whole concept.

Re: Current trends that annoy you

well the fact that victims now have to "prove" their victimhood or they get attacked. So to be clear, victims have to talk about one of their most sensitive and painful experiences to some internet strangers who wants them to prove themselves to avoid being dogpiled and had rumors spread about them.

I think this trend speaks for itself.

I mean....protecting victims seems like a pretty laudable concern to me. I'm confused how you made the jump to doxxing.

It's not hard at all. Doxxing is a standard part of "victim protection" on tumblr.

It helps to be really clear that you think these people are not really protecting victims. The quote marks weren't 100% clear imo. I didn't really get what you were saying at first either. (It kinda sounded like you were mocking people who actually were doing good things to protect victims)

THIS. This times a billion. Especially when as a CSA survivor and knowing a lot of them, the 'protecting' is a thousand times more triggery for us. I have never actually been triggered by a actual pedo ship because people are good about warning for that and I can easily avoid it.

But the callout posts and drama get everywhere. And nothing makes me feel more like shit that seeing the thing that still causes me problems get put as "exactly the same" as people writing or drawing fictional things. If seeing a picture of, fuck, I don't know, show-age Steve and Connie making out literally causes your vagina to become scarred up and sex painful then I feel really fucking sorry for you, but if it's just a squick then stop comparing it to the hell I went through.

In a fandom I'm in the latest is people saying that THEY interpret two characters (lets say Natasha and Sam Wilson) as having a sibling relationship because the Avengers "are like a family" So the latest is harassing shippers because shipping Natasha and Sam is triggery for incest survivors because they might headcanon them as being siblings.
