People are more disagreeing because OP is making very, very broad and strong and generalized versions of that argument.

Besides, if everyone is going to take things seriously, I would hope they can find other terms to discuss it other than "gross" and "creepy" as though social and systematic issues can be boiled down to whether they are "eww" or not. The trend bothers me possibly for the opposite reason as OP; if they're going to be serious about it then be serious about it. Bringing in kiddy words to describe serious issues is devaluing their own argument as well.

That is a problem. But I find that discussing issues like rape and racism with the same word you'd describe as finding a worm in your apple or a flavor of ice cream you don't like, is a solution that doesn't sit well with me.

Besides, if that's a problem, it's a problem for the word gross as well.

Sure. I think the word gross is going to run out pretty soon and we'll have to find another. It's a tough problem. But at least I can understand what people are getting at when they say gross even if it's not the word I would use.

OP here again - EXACTLY. If you're going to be serious about something, don't use words that make you sound like a kindergartner who just saw another kid eating their boogers.

I find that an additional issue with describing things as gross or creepy is that it makes it less about the problem and more about the speaker's personal feelings on them. It's no longer "a systematic problem" it's "disgusting to me, the speaker" and, assuming everyone is trying to be serious about serious issues, it moves the conversation away from the issue at hand and onto how squicked you are. The first time I saw someone say "rape is gross" I was like really... really? Are you serious.

On the flip side, labeling kinks and fiction with the blanket "gross" or "creepy" label is a different topic, but also pretty bad. Then again, kinkshaming seems to be back in these days, as long as you couch it in a social justice format. "Rape is gross" makes me stare at people like wtf did you just say, did you equate a horrible thing to "eww"? and "Non-con fic is gross and creepy" makes me roll my eyes at people and assume they're 13.

So in the end, the whole thing gets the worst of both sides.

I mean idk about you but I do find rape pretty...well...gross. It is a lot of negative things to me and one of them is gross. It disgusts me.

"Gross" has definitely changed in meaning recently and it's a broader term than it used to be. That happens.
