Is this related?

I've wondered, as someone not particularly into Wonder Woman, I thought she was an Amazon pre America. Why is she wearing American flag? Is it the flag?

I'm not sure if there was an original explanation but Wonder Woman is an old character so it was probably not thought of and was just in line with the type of design of the times.

However, the explanation given now is that an American pilot washed up on the Amazon's island and Wonder Woman took up the symbols of his flag as a courtesy (or something like that) when she left the island.

That's the explanation given now, but the original was blatantly "because this is the country where justice is" etc etc.

I figured as much.

She's an ambassador of sorts and her wearing the American flag-inspired outfit is her way of showing she still has hope for the US, despite its problems.

It depends on the writer. But I think the original explanation was that she was consciously trying to appeal to Americans by using familiar "patriotic" heraldry like an eagle and a field of stars in her outfit.

(Also, she's not actually wearing an American flag. She's wearing a design which uses red, white, and blue, which has a field of white stars on blue, but it's mashed up with some other stuff. Even the white stripes on her red boots aren't the same kind of striping as on the US flag.)

Are there other flags that have white and red stripes plus a field of white stars on blue? I'm honestly curious. I know red, white, and blue is a very common combination for flags but I don't know how common or unique other aspects of our flag are.

Well, technically, the "white stripes" on her boots are about as close to the white and red crosses on Australia's flag as to the Stars and Stripes.

There aren't very many flags, or heraldic symbols in general, which have that particular kind of starfield, period.

Like I said, it's meant to look American to Americans. But as a whole, her original costume is a sufficiently different design to be its own thing, due to the lack of the six horizontal stripes and the addition of various gold elements.

White and red crosses on the Australian flag? The only thing close to that on the flag is the Union Jack. Now Denmark or Switzerland have white crosses on red fields. Australia does have stars on a blue field though, but not in rows.

I...yes, I meant the Union Jack. That sentence got rewritten in a muddled way after I realized that the Blue Ensign flags are mostly blue and Wonder Woman's costume is mostly red.

But yes. Blue field with white stars, and in another spot, red with white highlights.

Do people really think that she's wearing a US flag? That's interesting.

The pants are what does it, they seem very reminiscent of the stars on blue in the American flag.
