Might want to take some time to learn about the history of Captain America. There is a reason he is named that for a reason.

Also, Captain America these days is a bit less, "rah rah America!".

It "sounds like" that but how about actually read it and see for yourself if it is or not?

And if you're not interested in reading it, how about don't make up pointless opinions about shit you haven't even read. No one's forcing you to talk about it, or to form an opinion of it. It's okay to have zero opinion whatsoever beyond "I'm not interested."

I think the character was created in the 40s, when people were more patriotic/jingoistic and when America was getting involved in WWII... that probably influenced the development of the character.

I think the people making the movies now are aware of how it could come off today, and take that into consideration.

It's a comic made by an American artist for an American company. If it was made by a French artist he would have been Capitaine French or something. So get the fuck over it. You sound like a whiny little baby.

Is this related?

I've wondered, as someone not particularly into Wonder Woman, I thought she was an Amazon pre America. Why is she wearing American flag? Is it the flag?

Oh, do fuck off. I absolutely love Captain America. He stands up for people regardless of where they come from. Not once have I got a 'murica vibe from him. And I'm British btw.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that. I'm from a country that's ridiculously unpatriotic, so stuff that most Americans wouldn't even notice I found weird at first. I wasn't as bothered by it as you apparently are, but I do wonder how it would work. Does he represent American values? Because few people can ever agree what those are. And does it mean he somehow represents the US? Because both in the comics as in the MCU I think he has disagreed with what the US has done. It's a name that comes with a lot of baggage.

Don't you think they might have thought about this potential criticism at some point over the years, and made an effort to not be quite so crude as the idea in your head?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If you'd actually bothered to find out a little more, you'd have found out that Captain America is really not about "FUCK YEAH AMERICA".
His origins may have started that way, but a lot has changed.

He's more about fighting human rights and helping those the government won't. He'd be vehemently against everything Trump stands for, to put it into perspective.

why are all the replies to this so mean

anyway, yeah, i hate american nationalism and the character might sound like the personification of that from the name, but he is really not who you think he is

for one thing, he challenges the us government when they do anything he thinks is wrong, and he doesn't blindly follow his higher ups orders. he doesn't blindly follow anyone's orders period. he's a very moral guy, and you learn that he became "captain america" because they wanted him to represent american patriotism and they wanted him to be their recruiter, but he doesn't stand for things blindly like most 'muricans these days

i'd say to give him a shot, but he might not be to your taste just based on his imagery (his costume is a walking american flag) but you never know until you try it

Wow, these are some unpleasant replies! I'm sure you're not the only one who feels that way. You don't have to like him, or America, if you don't want to.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-31 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who isn't American, I assumed Cap would be this obnoxious "AMURICA FUCK YEAH" jingoist. So you can imagine my surprise when he turned out to not be like that all (his movie version, anyway) and actually be shown to criticize his country and its government quite frequently. And to also have left leaning/liberal values.

Honestly, he's one of my favourite super heroes now because he's a kind hearted "hair of gold, heart of gold" hero done well. Like a non-OP Superman.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-31 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, listen, it's an ideological point that isn't exactly wrong, but at the same time, it generally works out pretty well in execution. And I think there's something to be said about national self-image here as well. What I mean, I guess, is that to me Captain America is part of a particular conception of an America that is pluralistic, democratic, liberal, multi-cultural, proactively tolerant, moral, etc. And while that self-conception of America is obviously contested, and we should never mistake that for the reality, it is - I think - a good thing to actively outline and defend. It's a good image to hold up as a goal.

To the extent that it's a question of Captain America being a specifically American character, of course, I couldn't give less of a shit if I tried really hard.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-31 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Are you Australian?

I've only ever encountered this strong a reaction to Americans making media about America because they like America and live there from Australians. Including an Australian friend of mine who likes marvel movies but gave me this exact explanation, almost word for word, about why she doesn't like captain america.

I just really don't get it. It seems like a waste of energy. Sometimes people are gonna talk about the nice things about the place they and 300 million other people live.

- not an american.

I used to think the same until I watched the movies and read the comics. Cap is a very cool guy and one of my fvaorite superheroes. Give the guy a chance.

[personal profile] philippos42 2016-08-31 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of Americans have the same impression as you do, OP. That's one reason Cap hasn't really been that popular a character, compared to Spider-Man or Batman.

I like Captain America, but I admit it's almost despite some of his more "patriotic" attitudes.

Look, I have no dog in this fight, as I haven't read the comics, either. But why on earth would you manufacture this reason to be irked by a piece of media you've never even read? You're basically making up a reason to be annoyed that has no basis in reality.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-31 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
America doesn't teach its citizens that it's the world police. It acts like it is but its citizens tend to be very much against this. And I can't think of any American who blindly accepts everything the government does.
