Fairs and festivals

I just went to the local state fair. Tell me about the local fairs and festivals where you live.

They are terrible. No place in Oklahoma sells red candy apples. They just sell caramel ones. Every year we go to the fair hoping to see them but there never are any. They also don't sell boiled peanuts. ;_;

Mmmm, caramel apples. I really like caramel anything. It is one of my favorite flavors.

boiled peanuts are a ridiculously local South Carolina thing. I don't think I've ever seen them outside of SC.

I know! I had to explain what they were to coworkers here in OK. They didn't even understand the words "boiled peanuts" together at first.

And they are EVERYWHERE in SC. There was a little stall in the Walmart parking lot, they are so popular there. But no where else. I don't care for them, but I know they're a favorite for some people.

They're definitely a thing in Georgia. I don't care for them but they're everywhere around here. Granted, I'm right on the border of GA and SC so that probably has something to do with it. XD

Confession: I have never had a red candy apple. They look so nice! What does the candy part taste like? Is the candy chewy, kind of like the texture of caramel? 'Cause I do think I'd have a problem with it if it was much harder than that.

/SPEWS QUESTIONS ABOUT CANDY APPLES?

The candy is actually really hard. It is basically a melted sugar coating that has hardened. They usually have a slight cinnamon taste but that depends on who makes them.

Oh yes! I loved those as a kid, but nowadays I prefer red candied grapes. They're even more amazing than apples. But I always have to wait for Christmas time to get them. :(

I don't really understand what boiled peanuts are. They're salty right? Do they taste any different than normal peanuts? More salty or more crispy?

I've never heard of red candied grapes. They are grapes covered in hard candy?

They are literally just raw peanuts that have been boiled for like nine hours in salt water. They are wayyyy saltier than normal peanuts. They are also completely soft. And delicious.

Good to know. I'll have to try them, if I ever make it to the US. :)

Yes, the grapes would be just like the apples, covered in a usually bright red sugar solution. Looking like this:

Our fair is huge. We got to see the baby animals, including lambs that were only a few hours old. There's always a ton of weird food on a stick. I tried chocolate-covered-bacon. The cows are huge. Also, there were a ton of llamas this year (spelled lama in everything we saw). And mules that were larger than most horses I've seen. I didn't know mules grew that big.

I live about twenty minutes away from where the State Fair of Texas is held and it's pretty massive. It's fun to go there and try some of the horrifically unhealthy food (I heard they're serving deep fried jell-o this year, good lord) but it's usually so crowded that I don't bother going most years.

How do you deep fry Jell-O? My Google-Fu only gave me pictures, but nothing on HOW. Do they flavor something fryable first with Jell-O, or do they just stick a cube on a stick and go at it? I can't imagine the cube on a stick working without it melting instantly.

I have no idea tbh, but they regularly fry coca cola and things like that so I guess they have their ways...

My old school's festival was canceled this year. Just not enough money. :(

Fortunately the much smaller festival next to my house is next week and I'll be able to bury myself in funnel cake.

I live in a pretty small city in europe but for some reason we have two huge annual festivals with half a million visitors and like 20 other fairs and party thingies throughout the year.

There are lots of shooting galleries and tombolas, and every club in town puts a booze-booth outside. Also there's langos (Hungarian deep fried pancakes) and flame-grilled salmon and churros. And super tasty sausage and belgian fries. And the kind guy from the booth where you throw darts at balloons who always gives out extra darts for the little kids and lets them have whatever prize they want.

I've never been to any around me, but I did go to the South Florida Fair while visiting a friend down there, and it was everything you could imagine and more.

There was quite a few in Milwaukee. I just moved here in April, so I wasn't prepared for just HOW many there were, but it seemed like every week, from May through July, there was a festival. There was a Pride festival, a Bastille Day festival, some huge city block party, a 4th of July festival, a Taste of Milwaukee, and I think a few smaller ones scattered about here and there.

I missed them all due to working, but now I know what to plan for next year.

I live in New England, and our collective big fair is the Big E. All six states come together for roughly two weeks of farming...stuff, craftsmanship, stunts, rides, and ridiculous food.

It is a proper thing. Maybe you only go once in your life, but you HAVE to go. And if you haven't gone, people will hound you about it.

I'll probably take my son this year.

I am really looking forward to the North Carolina State Fair this year. Some of the entertainment includes a "Medieval Viking" with an eight foot tall puppet dragon that walks around (it looks like Stormfly from How to Train Your Dragon), an educational show about wolves, and a man who worked on The Muppet comics.

There's one on the other side of the town at the moment and it's so freaking loud I can hear it all the way across and it's so noisy I can't spleep. I wish a sudden massive thunderstorm would close it down, or sabotage or massive failure would shut their power down, or a false alarm terror scare would occur and they have to evacuate.
Yeah I'm bitter when I'm sleep deprived and I don't care.
