Re: Seemingly progressive things that actually sound skeevy

What does skeevy mean? Is that the new creepy?

It's a slang term broadly comparable in meaning and connotation to creepy, yes. I don't think it's the "new" creepy. It's just a different word.

Thanks, but I wanted to understand how OP was using the word.

"Seemingly progressive that actually sound morally repugnant", I would assume

Do people use it in other ways?

Every person who uses the word skeevy probably means "morally repugnant," so I will just substitute that phrase mentally in the future when I hear this word. Thank you for your help! :)

I've found that's usually the case, tbh. Whenever anyone is "side-eyeing" or finds something "skeevy" or like OP said "rubs them the wrong way" it's usually something they find morally repugnant, or if used in a lighter context, morally dubious, about it.

I have never heard anyone describe a spider as "skeevy" for example, even if they think spiders are scary or disgusting. Moral judgment is always somehow linked

So how will I know if they mean "morally repugnant" or "morally dubious"? Which did OP mean?

OP: In my story's case, the latter.
(Why are you so set on this though?)

Well, considering op said "sounds" skeevy and not "is" skeevy, you can assume dubious. I assumed dubious because of that.

Context clues. :)

I don't think that's accurate. It's more generally used in a sense that... like, you get a bad or untrustworthy vibe or something.

But also, like... it's a slang term with a penumbra of connotations. Going aggro to nail down a specific definition seems weird and pointless and hard to account why you're doing that. Perhaps even --- skeezy?????

OP
I'm ESL but as far as I understood it, skeevy is something that isn't quite creepy but still really rubs you the wrong way.

Creepy/sleazy, but it's not new. It predates "sketchy."

In New York City it's pronounced "shkeevy" and is also a verb. "I shkeeve him!" It's Italian.

schif’/shkeeve – to be disgusted by something (schifo) [shkeef]

schifozz’ – disgusting thing (schifosa) [shkee-VOATZ]
