That 'duct tape' is the accepted generic of duck tape when real duct tape is an entirely different tape from duck tape.

Also when people argue something that's Wrong. Very wrong. And you know they're wrong. And you know you have proof they're wrong. But you know that there's no power in heaven or on earth that will ever convince them and you're just going to frustrate yourself arguing with them so it's better to walk away. Like if they're insisting that "cats and dogs aren't different species cats are a breed of dog." you know you're just... an ordinary mortal and not up for that kind of challenge. But it's sooooo tempting.

HVAC tape is duct tape. Cloth tape with a waterproof coating that sheds water 'like off a duck's back' is duck tape and shouldn't be used on heating ducts.

I know everyone uses duct tape for duck tape and that battle is long dead and gone but it bugs me.

"Duck Tape" is a registered trademark. That couldn't happen if it was the colloquial term for that kind of tape.
