Pet Peeves / Rants

Things that bother you, basically.

Re: Pet Peeves / Rants

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret number 5, obviously: i really don't like the idea of giving numerical rankings to talk about how attractive people are, especially when people act like it's some objective all encompassing thing. It's so silly and limiting and cold.

Re: Pet Peeves / Rants

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it is all subjective. My 9s are different from your 9s. And obviously is is cold because it is just based on looks. And it is limiting because it is used as a quick assessment usually between friends who know each other's likes and dislikes.

I agree it's dumb. I'm not against categorizing people as attractive or very attractive, but imo, most people have a spectrum of how attractive they are depending on the day/their fashion/if they showered/the angle of the photo.

Yeah, same. It rubs me the wrong way. I guess for me attractiveness has never been something so coldly quantifiable, because so many factors can contribute to it.

Re: Pet Peeves / Rants

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Most of the time, when I see people using numbers, they seem to believe that attractiveness is somehow subjective and that their numbers are therefore objective.

We should definitely be using letters, like "He's a total K" or "Check out that perfect H!"

faux sympathy for people with "weird" names. It's a passive aggressive and very fake way of making fun of someone's name while pretending you feel sorry for them. Some people like their uncommon names.

Re: Pet Peeves / Rants

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
This may surprise you, but some people do feel genuine sympathy for someone named Anakin-Sephiroth Loki Vaporeon Jones.

Because the only reason to express sympathy when little KVIIIlyn has to explain how to pronounce her name to 5 teachers before she has to face the hordes at lunch is passive-aggression.

Internet lynch mobs.

Seriously. I don't give a fuck. I think it's gross no matter how terrible the person is. Especially when the lynch mob in question can translate into real life violence. There is nothing that pisses me off more than people who make Facebook posts or whatever condoning torture, violence, and murder, and act like somehow they are on an ethical high horse because the person in question is a criminal/not actually a criminal but said something offensive/whatever.

Re: Pet Peeves / Rants

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
good rule of thumb: if "lynch mob" is in the name, it's probably a bad thing

Re: Pet Peeves / Rants

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lynch mobs are going to exist, in every internet controversy, no matter what. There is nothing that we can do one way or the other to effect that. Fact of life. So, to me, I'm going to condemn the things I think are right and support the things I think are wrong, and not base my support on an endless and inevitably futile attempt to sort out and adjudicate which side has "the high ground".

Re: Pet Peeves / Rants

People who constantly talk about trigger warnings, or people being triggered, when the term really doesn't apply. I've seen people laughing about how a bunch of other people were "triggered" because they were expressing disagreement with something in an article. Literally none of the disagree-ers had claimed to be triggered by anything. Of course the people calling them "triggered" didn't mean they actually were - it was more like they wanted to pretend the people disagreeing fit their silly image of some person (always a woman, usually obese, often dressed in some "alternative" style) who randomly starts yelling that's she's triggered.

So now all you have to do is disagree with someone, and someone will tell you you're claiming to be triggered, so everyone can yell at you for that.

And then there's my dad who heard the term microaggression, and will randomly accuse you (sarcastically) of using them when you're trying to talk about some normal thing. It's annoying as fuck.

Channel hopping during commercial breaks, I'd rather just leave it on the same channel and go get a drink/go to the bathroom or whatever than risk missing something in the show I'm watching(it doesn't help that the people I know irl that do this cannot time the adverts correctly for shit and always end up going back to the show several minutes in).

And noisy eaters, or people that chew with their mouths open.

I often see an argument that governments, newspapers, political parties, etc. frame their opponents as "the enemy" in a fundamentally contradictory way. On the one hand, "the enemy" is a threat that must be stopped, but on the other hand, "the enemy" consists of morons who do ridiculous things. The argument goes that one or both must be false, since morons aren't dangerous.

I think this argument underestimates how ridiculous cult-like organizations can become. Whether they're literal cults like the Manson family or just masses of shared hatred like the KKK, they often normalize all sorts of ridiculous beliefs and behavior that seem laughable to an outside perspective. They usually have no way to achieve the long-term goals they insist they're pursuing, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous when they lash out at people they see as blocking those goals.

I think in order to truly understand groups like ISIS, we need to recognize how ridiculous they can be. That doesn't mean disregarding all the harm they do, but rather putting that harm in perspective as they flail towards outsized goals that will never come to pass. Claiming that their silliness or their danger is all an invention of the government or the media is, well, silly.

Flat prose

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I had heard a lot of good things about this book I'm reading, but I'm finding it a real slog--precisely, I think, because it's meant to be written in an easy and accessible style. There are a lot of short, simple sentences, few modifiers, no difficult words--and the result is unbearably dull and plodding. If this prose were any flatter and drearier, they could lay it down as linoleum in a hospital basement.

Trial by internet.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I am so, so sick of it. The Internet has no way of judging a person the way a jury or a judge can. They don't have all of the facts, they don't have the precedent, they don't understand. Yes, I understand that juries and judges sometimes get it wrong, but on the other hand, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that an internet lynch mob, built solely on the opinions, assumptions, and emotions of uninformed people, would be any better.

An example I would give would be the recent case where Ke$ha was not let out of her contract with her alleged rapist. The internet was full of people condemning the entire legal system because of this decision. They wanted the judge thrown off the bench. I felt sympathetic with her, don't get me wrong. She deserves justice. But, on the other hand, I totally understood why the judge decided that way. If every person was allowed out of a contract simply because they ACCUSED someone of a crime (which, by the way, hadn't even gone to trial at the time of the controversial decision), the entire system of contracts would basically fall apart. Judges might make decisions individually, but they also have to consider the district-wide implications of their decisions.

I'm tired of people making decisions and judgments without knowing the facts. I'm sick of people who want to ruin people's entire lives because they assume someone is on the "wrong" side of a debate. This is not the way justice is meant to work.

That 'duct tape' is the accepted generic of duck tape when real duct tape is an entirely different tape from duck tape.

Also when people argue something that's Wrong. Very wrong. And you know they're wrong. And you know you have proof they're wrong. But you know that there's no power in heaven or on earth that will ever convince them and you're just going to frustrate yourself arguing with them so it's better to walk away. Like if they're insisting that "cats and dogs aren't different species cats are a breed of dog." you know you're just... an ordinary mortal and not up for that kind of challenge. But it's sooooo tempting.

"Feminists" who whine that female hygiene products use blue liquid for their commercials. Suffering through a massively uncomfortable, painful and disgustingly strong period right now, I feel mocked by all those morons insisting on pretending periods are some fucking beautiful gift and should be celebrated. I don't want see mucus-and-clots-filled blood on TV every time they show a tampon or pad commercial. Because yes, it's bloody (ha!) disgusting.
I also don't want close ups of a liquid shit and piss filled diaper every time a diaper commercial comes on.
