Are you saying you read the comments first and then, based on them, decide whether you want to read the fic? I don't think that's how most people do it.

What can I say? When I read a fic I want it to be good. Apparently having standards is a crime around here.

But are the comments the gauge by which you decide if you will read a fic? I have never heard of this. Aren't you afraid of spoilers?

The AYRT isn't being very nice, but yeah. Sometimes I'll read comments first if I've been striking out on finding good things. I just read slowly enough that I can back away if it seems like something's going to be spoilery. And besides, it's not like the quality of comments or the quantity for that matter is all that high these days.

Comments can't really tell you whether a fic is good, though? If a fic hits a fandom's collective id the right way, it's gonna be adored, regardless whether it's well-written.

Also, I mean...it's fic. It's mostly going to be bad. Most published fiction is bad, and that stuff has to go through editors and boards and whatnot. At the end of the day, we're accessing works that were written for free and for the pure sake of it by people who are, by and large, not professionals, and while there are those who want to get better, there are also those who are just looking to have fun. Expectations ought to be set accordingly.

It just ain't serious business, in any case.

Sometimes, though, the comments can tell you whether a fic is hitting a fandom's collective id--or at least, the collective id of some of the fandom. Sometimes the kind of praise a fic is receiving is enough to warn you away.

Hmm, that's a good point! There are some fics where, if you see enough of a certain type of positive comment, you can make a pretty good assumption of what it's gonna be like.

I feel like that's a really uneven rubric to go by, though. I've come across some really horribly written fics that have, for whatever reason, inspired amazing meta-analysis in the comments.
