Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

Let me get this straight.

"Asian/Eastern countries are misogynistic as all hell" = a perfectly acceptable opinion

"Muslim countries are misogynistic as all hell" = YOU RACIST!!! #notall

How dat work?

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
"many" as in meaning not all + speaker themselves being asian is how that works?

you're like grasping for wank that isn't there. calm down.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I'd say both of those statements are accurate.

On that noted, I have noticed that when Muslim and ex-Muslim feminists speak out against misogyny in their cultures they are called traitors by white western feminists, but I rarely see these same white westerners screaming at Asian feminists for talking about misogyny in Asian cultures. Weird double standard there.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
yeah it's 'acceptable' for non asians to say japan is the most racist, awful country ever, but hdu diss islam?

on the other hand, the tack anon is taking is 'hdu diss your own region/culture, op?' which is an idiotic point from which to make that argument.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, true. I wonder if this is the same anti-Islam anon who once derailed a thread about Bible slashfic because they were so desperate for an opportunity to call Muslims pedophiles, or something like that.

I think it's a stupid double standard but I totally get why it exists - Islamophobia is rampant and very visible right now, so the backlash is much stronger.

I wish we could be more reasonable and levelheaded overall though. :/

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, thank you, the double standard was what I was trying (and obviously failing) to draw attention to.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
yeah like, i get your point, and its not untrue, but this instance is not one of them since the speaker is actually from the region and part of the group they are talking about.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
So are you saying that the only people who can criticize the misogyny in a culture are those who are from that culture?

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
nah

you tried to use this situation as an example of a double standard: outsiders being able to criticize one group but not another, showing a bias in how groups are treated by them.

i'm saying the double standard you are talking about doesn't apply here because this situation doesn't involve an outsider talking about an other-group at all.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Look.

I've seen non-Asian Westerners call Asian cultures misogynistic, pedophilic, etc., and others chime in in agreement.

And then when non-Asian Westerners say the same thing about Muslims, they're called racist.

I want to know why.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
but... that has nothing to do with an asian person saying that their own region or culture has issues with gender equality. before you accuse me of being the double standard bearer, i'm also asian. can confirm many of our countries' cultures have issues just like everyone else's.

you're derailing anon's thread to make it all about some random other situation happening, when it hasn't happened. your agenda is clear but it's just not relevant or applicable here.

i suppose you can go on ranting about it though.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you avoiding the question?

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
then start your own thread for it since it's a separate issue

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Done

http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1479188.html?thread=929976852#cmt929976852

How long do you think it will take before the accusations of racism start flying and the thread gets shut down?

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I wouldn't say that, but I would say that such people should be seen as the best authorities on the topic.

Look at it this way. Whose critique of Islam are you going to take more seriously: Ayaan Hirsi Ali's, or the rantings of some white Republican pundit who thinks the War on Christmas is a thing?

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ayaan Hirsi Ali's of course! Yet she gets disinvited from colleges from feminist groups. I want to know why.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because college activist groups are breeding grounds for the sort of myopic America-centric neo-liberal faux-feminist anti-critical-thinking nonsense that leads to people making ridiculous statements like "the world would be better off if we killed all the straight white cismen."

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
???? Not sure what you mean. With Asian / Eastern countries, quite a few have a lot of Muslims or a heavily Islamic-influenced government. Malaysia is currently going through a lot of stuff with Islamic parties gaining political power and introducing some really stupid legislation, and places like Indonesia have their own issues. From personal experience with the culture there I can say that I've seen them to be misogynistic as all hell.

Also I'm actually ex-Muslim and part of why I cut myself off from the community in GENERAL after leaving the religion is due to the ridiculous amount of bigotry in general that I was dealing with. They don't get a free pass here.

Plus being Muslim has like fuck all to do with races. It's much more of a cultural issue than anything. A lot of Chinese people are Buddhist, but criticizing Buddhism isn't being racist against Chinese people, that's just ridiculous. Especially considering not all TYPES of Muslims are the same, that there are different sects of Islam and so on - things that apply to different places.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I bet feminists really hate you.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Also not sure what that's supposed to mean but sure ok.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I mean that anytime I see anyone saying the kinds of things you're saying here, they get dogpiled for it?

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
?? You're the only one here saying that should be happening, but it isn't.

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying you've never been dogpiled by feminists for expressing concerns about the way Islamic cultures treat women?

Re: Things you think the world would be better off without

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Nope.

And I'm not particularly quiet about this in real life either, I've had some very good discussions with Muslim and feminist friends about this. A lot of them are working against some of the issues we agree on, which is cool in my book.
