Well, considering the fact that there are plenty of shows where the most popular ships involve supporting characters....

And in every single one I've ever seen those supporting characters are either more attractive than the protagonists or hit on specific yaoi tropes fangirls love like mentor/student or rivals.

Whereas if the protagonists are hot and shippable they'll slash the fuck out of them no matter what colour their dicks are, even if there are other random white dudes available (see: Carver/Isaac by far the most popular DS3 pairing, Ajay/Min and Ajay/Sabal the most popular FC4 pairings, even though there are also white guys there).

Can you give some examples? I'm curious what those shows have in common. I mean I think that Protag/slightly more supporting character is a lot more common if the main protags are related, because a lot of people are squicked by incest.
But in stuff like FMA, which is edging towards ensemble cast, Ed/Al was still super popular, even if I'm not sure that Roy/Ed didn't beat it.
It's not just about having a pair of protagonists as leads, but also them having a strong relationship between the two of them, imo.

And are there that many examples where ships that don't involve the MCs are the absolute most popular?

These are all fandoms where the most popular pairing doesn't involve the protagonist (although some of the characters involved can still be considered "mains"):

- Arthur/Eames (Inception) (m/m)
- Derek/Stiles (Teen Wolf) (m/m)
- Oliver/Connor (How to Get Away with Murder) (canon pairing) (m/m)
- Shizuo/Izaya (Durarara!!) (m/m)
- Aoime/Kagami (Kuroko no Basuke) (m/m)
- Katara/Zuko (A:TLA) (m/f)
- Barney/Robin (How I Met Your Mother) (m/f)

And this is just shit I know off the top of my head. I'm not in many fandoms. I'm sure there's more.

Oh, and you can add Kylo/Hux from Star Wars: TFA to this list too.

This is a good list, because it demonstrates my point pretty well: Arthur/Eames, for example, are considerably younger than the Dicaprio and Watanabe, as well as more conventionally attractive, Katara/Zuko plays to romantic bad boy/strong woman tropes fangirls love, etc.

It has nothing to do with "white dick" (as evidenced by this happening with het pairings and POC and not happening in cases where the protags are non-white but hot and tropey) it has to do with people being shallow and predictable.
