Favorite Autumnal / Melancholy Things

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess those are two different things, but I always find fall a little bit melancholy, so it works in my head.

Anyway: fall is here, or will soon be here, so what are your favorite elements of fall? Scarves? Pumpkin spice? Football? Anything goes.

And also, what are some tropes that you find melancholy in a really pleasant way? If someone was going to make some kind of Gothic melodrama particularly targeted towards you, what would be in it?

The cooler weather. Soon I will be able to go out for more than 30 minutes and not start to melt!

Also, hot chocolate and pumpkin things my sister makes.

Walking alone on a foggy autumn morning. Melancholy, but in a sort of peaceful way.

I'm "basic bitch" about fall - though I kind of resent that ribbing, because why is it a bad thing? Baking with apples and pumpkin! Cinnamon in everything! Candles! Halloween! Cooler weather and layering clothes, and it being socially acceptable to start wearing cute boots!

I love pumpkin spice in theory, but tbh Starbucks-esque Pumpkin Spice Lattes are so syrupy sweet they burn my tongue and don't taste like coffee at all.

This is me, I like the idea of pumpkin spice but the reality of it is way to sweet and cloying for me.

the start of a new semester is kinda melancholic/hopeful. the scrunching of leafs under one's soles.

Any great Gothic melodrama needs dramatic weather (and pretty people). Give me all the storms, on the page or screen.

One of my favorite things is to see the cemetery lit up with candles around All Hallows Eve. I used to take late night walks through the largest cemetery in Gothenburg, Sweden, and it was so pretty with all the lights.

Colorful leaves leave me melancholy. They're pretty, but I hate what follows after (because winter lasts 7 months here) and I'm not ready to let go of summer.

I like big scarves and being able to wear suede boots without ruining them. It's not too cold to wear a simple leather jacket or go outside without a hat or gloves.

I like the crisp mornings when it's cool and the fog is so thick you can't see where you're going, and it sticks to your face if you run or cycle too fast...

I like that during nighttime it's actually dark outside but there's no snow.

I love the Day of the Dead because I like candles and visiting graveyards.

Cooler weather and rain, red and orange leaves against the bright blue sky, fall foods like apple and pumpkin pie, corduroy pants, boots, sweatshirts, Halloween stuff, smelling woodsmoke in the air on a crisp evening as I'm walking home.

Where I live, it's not really fall yet, more an extension of summer. It doesn't start getting fall-like until late October or early November. I adore fall because the weather is cooler (I can't stand the heat) and I get to dress in layers. I like taking walks in the rain. I guess there's something melancholy about that, but it's a really soothing activity for me that helps clear my mind.

Cooler weather, how the light changes, how the scent of the air changes, more rain, turning leaves, shorter days, *cold* nights, electric blankets, big sweaters, Xmas.

Echoing the mentions of cooler weather, Halloween, and leaves changing. I also love the way the clouds start looking this time of year-they get a bit more of a silvery look to them sometimes on particularly chilly days. It just adds to the overall pretty scenery on a crisp, pleasant fall day.

I also love fall because it means my favorite TV shows return for new seasons :D. And my birthday's in the fall as well :). I generally don't do anything super exciting for it, but still, it's a fun thing to look forward to anyway.

I love scarves and being able to wear layers and love tat the weather isn't stiflingly hot and humid, but I do miss being able to wear summer dresses and hate knowing that several months of shitty driving conditions are just around the corner.

I love the spices that go into pumpkin pie spice, but find most "pimpkin spice" flavored things to be too overly sweet and to tend to lean too heavily on cinnamon without enough clove or ginger.
