It's not ONLY possible if Sulu was living a lie. For Pete's sake.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you think it is only possible that he is hiding his sexuality?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming you are heterosexual, OP: when did someone last ask you if you are heterosexual? Never, you say? Does that mean you are hiding your heterosexuality?

I'm confused about why you're assuming OP is heterosexual.

It's a rhetoric device.

Haven't seen the new movie, but does it explicitly say Sulu is gay?
Couldn't he be bisexual?

There's a clear shot of him with his husband and daughter after returning from a mission for about ten, fifteen seconds.

I mean he can definitely be bi, but that's all the glance we get in Beyond.

I rolled my eyes when I heard the news. Of course Sulu, the one with an actual gay actor would be gay.

IMO they should have made Scottie gay. Imagine the big cuddly bear Scottie would be.

Or Chekhov but I only say that because I was never a fan of TOS and literally didn't know Chekhov existed until the reboot and even after his actor's death is still a non-entity to me.

I doubt TOS Sulu was repressing his sexuality, given "The Naked Time". Mostly he seemed to be repressing a deep desire to be a half-naked space swashbuckler who flirts and/or fences with both Uhura and Kirk. I think I always figured him to be a bit bi, but mostly focused on his career and adventuring more than romance. I know he ended up with a daughter somewhere before the TNG era, and I think a wife in at least some of the EU, but that hardly precludes him being attracted to both sexes. He just always seemed primarily orientated towards his career and his camaraderie with the rest of the crew.

Either way, though, I'm not sure how the sexuality of an alternate universe version of him is supposed to reflect back directly on the original. It's an alternate universe. A different sexuality is hardly a more drastic change than, say, being a sadistic evil bastard who slaughters planets out of hand. Hi, Mirror Universe! (Actually, didn't Mirror!Kira switch sexualities as well, now that I'm thinking of it? Or were both of them bi? It's been a while since I watched DS9)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the new movie, but isn't it less an alternate universe in the "parallel universes" sense (like the Mirror Universe) and more in the "diverging timelines" sense (like Back to the Future)? I think Sulu's supposed to be the same age or older than Kirk, so the differences in his character should be environmentally driven, not innate, because the divergent event would have happened after he was born.

Yeah Mirror!Kira was bi because she was evil. Normal verse Kira was only ever seen to date men.

The original Sulu was never involved in a heterosexual romance, unless you count tie-in novels. We just know he had a daughter. It's very possible that he could have been gay or bi.

I love your icon.

I sort of agree? I don't buy changes to alternate universes if there's no logical reason for it, and I have no idea how the Kelvin being attacked would lead to Sulu having a different sexuality than in TOS.

However, him being bi is something I can perfectly believe. He just started a family with a different person in the reboot universe than in TOS/the EU, that's all.

I like how you think... I'm okay with new Sulu's brief shot with his family, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was very well handled, as in it wasn't made out to be a big deal. What were you expecting, OP, for Sulu to come out to all of his friends and for the film to make him being gay into a massive thing? I actually thought the film showed a very positive future (as Star Trek likes to do) in which a man having a husband and child is not judged in any way. His sexuality is a facet of his life, it's not his entire life.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
George Takei has stated that TOS Sulu is straight. I figure if the original gay actor says his character is straight, he oughtta know.

And he commented on it, too. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/george-takei-reacts-gay-sulu-909154)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the original series even touching on Sulu's love life. So I don't get it.

*bangs fist on table* BI SULU BI SULU BI SULU

Seriously, though-- there's no reason that TOS Sulu would HAVE to have been in the closet, or to extrapolate that the closet has to exist. Maybe Sulu is bi/pan and that's why one of them had his daughter because of a prior heterosexual relationship and the other adopted his daughter with his husband. Or maybe it's one of the differences between these slightly-different parallel universes! I mean, the reboot has a blue-eyed Kirk, a smaller, blonder Scotty... clearly not everyone is a perfect match to their alternate selves, so why not that?

(I agree that Bones is the best, though, in terms of 'oh man, I'm looking at Bones' instead of feeling like I'm looking at some new actor pretending to be Bones. Which, sure, is the truth-- it's the truth for everybody in any work of fiction, but man, he was so right on... My mom was instantly sold on him, and Bones had been her favorite character when she was growing up with TOS)

this. urban has definitely been one of the best parts of the reboot for me and I love seeing interviews where he talks about how much he admired kelley's portrayal of the character and how much he likes playing the character in general. it's clear that he has a lot of respect for the role and it makes me happy that so many people recognize this.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh God, yes, Urban is a fantastic Bones. I love how he clearly has a lot of respect for the character, he plays him with such dedication that it just left me speechless. From the voice to mannerisms, he's just so spot on. The rest of the cast is wonderful, too (I do find Pine's Kirk to lack the certain air of authority Shatner had and Quinto's Spock is a bit too stiff even for a Vulcan -- still love 'em though), but Bones is the main reason why I enjoy the new movies so much...Kelley's Bones lives on and that's just beautiful.
