Fandoms you used to love and now actively dislike

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-09-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any fandoms that you used to really love, but now you can't watch or read or play them and you really don't like them anymore?

For me, the two would be Bones and House. I used to be really into them, and now I have no desire to even go back and rewatch the earlier stuff. The stuff that came later ruined them for me, and now I don't like any of the characters.

I was never really in the fandoms for Bones or House, but I still totally agree about the shows themselves. I quit Bones in disgust somewhere around late S5/early S6. And I got the feeling House was going south, so I quit watching, and then when I found out about how the writers played out the whole House/Cuddy thing (especially the ending) I was SO very glad I'd left already.

House made me glad I bailed after Amber's death. The whole switch from Mystery Diagnosis in show-not-documentary form to drama bombz just killed my enjoyment entirely.

But even still, trying to go back and watch the earlier stuff made all the drama that was always lurking stand out more. (Like the Vogler thing. I'm 99% sure donations don't work that way. I don't think I could donate $100 to Red Cross and then find out later that they're planning to give a transfusion to someone I don't like and demand they don't or give me my money back. ) When I try to rewatch I usually end up fastforwarding or skipping a lot of stuff.

Welcome to Night Vale. The fandom was one of the biggest reasons I lost interest in the show. But I did move on to better story podcasts. :P

I lost interest when they started having A Plot. YMMV and all that, but I liked it better when it was just weird, random stuff that happened.

Yeah, same. The fandom, the new direction of the plot and I also developed a strong irrational dislike for Joseph Fink. I can't even really put my finger on why, but he seems so smug and grating most of the time.

I wasn't terribly deep into FiM, but I did actually keep up with episodes.

They're so constantly EPIC and SERIES CHANGING to the point where I'm like "Just stop it."

Ender' Game. I was really into the series as a young teenager. Then the info about Card actively donating to homophobic organizations broke, and I haven't been able to enjoy the books since.

STAR WARS.

I can't even see the logo on a sign in a store these days without getting irrationally angry at it. It was fandom what killed my love for it - constant prequel bashing combined with social media oversaturation of geeks quoting it, making references, and shoveling it into every corner of my consciousness. It's sort of like listening to your favorite song too often, until you make yourself sick of it and then can't stand even having it come on over the grocery store muzak.

FMA, to some extent. I hated the end of the manga so much that it soured me terribly on everything. It's been a few years now, and I'm not as broken up about it, but I haven't been able to bring myself to read the manga again, or watch the anime.
I used to list FMA as one of the best anime out there and rec it everywhere, but nowadays it's hard to bring myself to, even though the series is actually quality. So I might suggest it, but my heart's not in it, if that makes sense.

why did you hate the manga?

This is probably fair. I'm still in it for the fanfic, and the fandom was really great, for the first couple of years, before the endless in-fighting started, but...yeah...I get why some people are very done with this show/fandom.

Supernatural. Yikes.

Obviously not everyone, but as a monolith.

Eurgh. The goddamn Kingdom Hearts fandom, hands down. Can't even play the games anymore because it's like "fuckin' hell what shit are they doing in the game this time"

The main one for me is NCIS. I used to love the show and fandom so much I would do a lot of work as the main editor of the LJ NCIS newsletter. And I would have lots of meta posts, make icons, read and review fanfic, etc. But then a subset of fans killed my enjoyment of the show. I started by backing out of fandom and ended up not having anything to do with the show anymore.

But on more minor scales, CSI (because I hated Sara/Grissom and they made it canon) and Haven (because they really changed the characters from what I liked). I gave up on Bones and House too, but I was only in the periphery of those fandoms.

Thief. Hidebound, possessive, delusional and conservative (in the non-political sense, though some of the BNFs are Trump supporters to the surprise of fucking nobody.)

I would never be able to take Dragonball Z serious enough to sit through an episode.

A similar sentiment applies to Transformers (especially Bayverse) and SPN, with a bit more degree of embarrassment and shame involved.

I am so sunk in my own little LotR headcanon I don't think I could look at most Hobbit fanfic, even if the fandom wasn't swamped with Mirkwood Elves. The usual suspects in Dwarf shipping (Bagginshield, Fili/Kili) are just not pairings I can read now.

The MCU. Lately it feels like the fandom's more interested in talking about how awful the movies and shows are, how Disney/Marvel treats its characters and stories like shit, how Feige and his corporate cronies are reactionary neanderthals who hate diversity. Like the whole attitude is "LOL the MCU sucks why am I still obsessed with it" and I'm like.......

At least Luke Cage looks cool.

Harry Potter.

I blacklisted 'muggleborn' on tumblr because if I had to scroll by one more viral post about 'gross racist purebloods' gaping like slack jawed yokels at Harry Potter using his muggleborn know-how to solve a magical problem with superior muggle technology I was going to barf.
