38. Well, I left the dressing room, so you all don't have to worry about it any more.

But if you had really wanted to know why the choice was made, you should've contacted me directly instead of making this secret.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-12 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Does this mean the cap is lifted? Sorry to see you go though.

[identity profile] kecleon.livejournal.com 2008-04-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll have to ask the other mods about that.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon but WTF WHY ARE YOU LEAVING???

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
DDDDDDD: Don't leave!!! I'm not the OP but I think what they were trying to say is that some 'crack versions' are well-thought out and some weird characters aren't getting banned while this puts a stop to any parody characters or 'different' characters (like the kids) who could get development.

You're my favorite mod ;_; please don't go.

[identity profile] grandrevival.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think the mods said that so long as the 'crack versions' (mostly AUs) were handled with backstory and some degree of ICness (ergo, we can still tell that IDK Fashion Designer!Nick was still Phoenix and not some person with his name tacked on) that there was no problem. There's a contact post and mod AIM info all about the place (or at least when going in chat, you can request an IM session with one of the mods if they're there).

However I wouldn't quote me on this. At least not unless a mod says something like this too.

[identity profile] shahni.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, you're right. That's exactly what was being done. We don't want people like... PENIX WRIGHT, for example-- as much as I love the lulz, there's a limit. The occasional crack character's fine but when they start getting overwhelming and intrusive, you're like... ugh, okay, no.

/random pitch in

[identity profile] scientivity.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to hear that. Are you still going to be playing with us, or are you leaving altogether?

As for the secret... I agree that it could have - and should have - been brought to your attention much more tactfully (and at this point I'm kicking myself for not bringing it up in the mod post itself). Still, I feel like the reasons behind the choice should have been explained to us with the announcement itself, so no one felt the decision was being made arbitrarily. It was a sticky thing to begin with, and I think there may have been some unfortunate misunderstandings.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC.

I like that the mods are doing a job of keeping development as a focus, but they should have run this by the players too.

Why not have it so that if the players feel a character is too "weird", they contact the mods first? I've spoken to them all and they're pretty approachable.

Don't leave us, Jess-mod!

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
;___________; DON'T LEAVE US, JESSMOD. WHO'S GOING TO BE OUR FAVORITE APOLLO EVARRRR???

Why are you leaving anyway??? D:

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Passive-aggressive much?

Sorry, Jess-mod, but if you're going to moderate you'll need some thick fucking skin. You can't be throwing a hissy fit because people say they don't agree with something you did. Granted, you're a great player, but you're a kind of shitty mod and you act like a child when you don't get your way.

[identity profile] kecleon.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
For the record, I didn't leave because of this secret. I'd left before it was brought to my attention. There were many, many reasons as to why I left an RP I started. Many of them are personal; this was not a decision I made lightly.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure the timing was just a coincidence.

OP #38

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately I don't do well with bringing my opinions across where I feel as though the person I shall speak with will not listen to reason, and yes, I should have contacted you, but you were not very approachable when I attempted (ergo a chatroom is not the best place to initiate conversation imho) but this was something I think more than one person agreed with and could not bring themselves to say. Hence the secret.

I'm sorry to see you leave the DR, but I just wanted plausible reason as to why certain types of characters, who have room for development and growth, were being capped. I'm not sure why this warrants departure, if you will forgive the assumption that that is the reason you chose to leave. If not, please ignore this. ^^;;

You're a very good mod, it will be a shame to see you go T_T

Re: OP #38

[identity profile] llamaramauk.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to agree with you that chatrooms are not ideal, but that is why God invented IM and email.

Re: OP #38

[identity profile] bluffing-ruffle.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I am going to throw in my two cents here and remind everyone of the following.

I have repeatedly told people in chat that if they have a problem with someone or something, they should come to me with it. Part of what I do best is playing the therapist and the mediator and while it's not always successful, I would rather we have an ATTEMPT at it. I've said this many times, and even a few of them BEFORE I became a mod.

Jessmod is also not the only mod--if you wanted to know what the reasons were, you could also have asked any of the rest of us. It is not as though I am not in chat nearly every single day.

To be perfectly frank, I am incredibly disappointed that this was even considered a viable option.

Now. Let us all learn from this and try to prevent ourselves from letting things get this far out of hand again.

Re: OP #38

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Geez, chill out. Why are you guys stirring up so much drama over it? It's just a fandom secret. All it is is someone getting a personal opinion off their chest... and I thought it was rather politely worded, too. It's really no big deal, at least it wasn't until you guys started flipping out over it. Try not to get so wound up over things like this, the person who made the secret obviously wasn't trying to step on any toes. Besides, coming to you would have broken anonymity, maybe they didn't want to reveal themselves because they were afraid you'd react the same way you're reacting right now.

Re: OP #38

(Anonymous) 2008-04-14 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
The purpose of this community is to share opinions that we may not be comfortable expressing openly. If members of your community do not do not feel comfortable enough to approach you or your co-mods directly than it is your error, not theirs, for not projecting an open, considerate presence.

Treating your members like children in the aftermath is not going to correct your unapproachable image.

[identity profile] llamaramauk.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's either necessary or wanted, Jess. I shall personally be very sorry if you resign because of this and I know a great number of other people will feel exactly the same way.

FWIW I support all the decisions the mods have made thus far on PWDR and find the mods generally very light of hand.

In my view, this is not the place to air questions about mod decisions which have not yet affected anyone, and really if OP had a problem they should have raised it with one of the other mods, rather than made an FS about it.

But then, I'm old skool - from the days when you actually addressed your problems to the person concerned before broadcasting them to the world. *shrugs*

OP #38 here

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't disagree that the mod is a good one, but my attempt at contacting them resulted in failure. I'm regretting making a fandomsecret about it, but it seemed to be the only outlet I had.

I wished to create some AU characters for development, and now I cannot thanks to this cap. If mods are getting upset over the truth of the matter, then it shows that they never consulted other players about this to begin with.

Re: OP #38 here

[identity profile] llamaramauk.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Mods and comm owners do not have to consult players in order to make the rules. That's not how it works in most places on the Internet or elsewhere. I know, as I have modded for other owners in other areas of the Internet and it can be a cold, cold world.

The fact that PWDR *has* in general been rules-light, and consulted the players on a lot of decisions or allowed the community to run itself to a large degree is unusual. It demonstrates a general level of respect and trust in the players that I think up until now has largely been justified.

Unfortunately I think this type of reaction to a rule that is unlikely to affect the majority of players would make me reconsider that trust and respect, were I a mod myself. I have never had trouble contacting a mod on PWDR when I have needed to - there is at least one online at all times even given the timezone difference that I have to deal with.

I find it very difficult therefore to believe that this was the only recourse, and so quickly after the new rule was posted, too.

Well, I think the line between AU and Crack is not DEFINITE, although it's fairly simple to figure out the difference between the two.

If you can fit a story around the character, and not shove them IN to the story pre-made, then I don't think it's crack (just like a certain someone said, I'm just repeating them).

E.g, 555-Klav is crack. KataMiles is crack. Matt*DeMasque isn't crack, he's AU.

... I think. I'm not a mod, so I wouldn't know, but that's my opinion.

You will be missed, Jess. What I said before... I stand by it, dear. :]

I'm less concerned with the actual decision (though I do not agree with it) and more with how it was brought to the attention of the players. The announcement, when I read it, came off as very flippant and arbitrary. From what I'm understanding here, there were some other concerns than what was mentioned in the announcement that prompted the decision, but I'm only gathering that because it was brought up here, and I'm still unsure as to what those other reasons are.

I agree wholeheartedly that this is not the ideal place for something like this to be discussed, but I also think that since it seems to have caused enough problems to carry it over here, that we should at least address it. I really don't want anything like this to happen again.
