That's sort of harsh. I'm sort of glad she's a bit of a nobody now in terms of celebrity, but...people who are anti-vax generally are so because of misguided ideas about medicine/science and because they, ironically, want to protect kids.

I think the better solution is better education in that sense - or hell, basically just making vaccinations obligatory - instead of wishing people dead.

Thank god school districts are starting to lay the smackdown on it and not allowing children admittance without proof of vaccination. That's all that needed to happen. Sure, you can not vaccinate your kids if big words scare you, but keep them the absolute fuck away from every other kid.

Yeah we are finally getting back to where we were in the late 90s and early 00s of no longer tolerating arrant stupidity again. Hopefully we'll move to smacking down religions again. Tolerating their right to be intolerant is moving fast out of fashion again. Heh, there was a good example of the latter on the SJW publisher Tor site last week. They put up a typical tolerate the intolerable piece of bullshit about even religion had a place in Star Trek and their usually woolly minded fluffy bunny comments section smacked it down hard. That took them by surprise that did. Like vaxxers, religion has no place in a progressive society.

Ah yeah that's the good stuff

Much more novel type of crazy than the anti vaxxers

I like how the anon replied to me and not you.

I'm just sad I didn't get to ask whether they had any opinion about Hugo nominations

(they definitely did)

You just copy and pasted this from r/IAmVerySmart, aren't you?

No. I was not aware of that until now, and to prove I'm not very smart; I'm still not entirely sure what you mean. Is it reddit-4chan kind of thing?

Well, let's just hope there's no massive increase in homeschooling because of it.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Moving the weirdos back into home schooling is a good thing though. Keeps them in their own community to spread the deadly diseases amongst themselves and not others, keeps their ideas away from the mainstream too.

Homeschoolers do still go to public places, you know.

They don't stay at home forever. They just stay until they're 18 and then wander, poorly educated, poorly socialized, and in this specific case, riddled with communicable diseases, back into mainstream society. Like a human dirty bomb.

Kids deserve healthcare. Mandating vaccines in public schools is important and a good start, but it's not all that is needed. All kids should be vaccinated, full stop.

This argument is sort of like the argument that infant circumcision is okay if there's a religious exemption. No.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Re: circumcision of male infants

Not your son? Not your decision.

Amazingly, "my son" (don't have any kids yet, but probably will in future) won't be my property. Sorry, kids don't belong to their parents and humans have the right to bodily autonomy, full stop.

Assuming you're not trolling, because the way you worded your comment kinda makes it sound like you are.

There's some truth to that, but at the same time, there's a point where you're talking about willful ignorance and not a lack of education, and I think McCarthy passed that point long ago.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-09-14 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly the core that unsettles me about the autism/vaccine debate is that you're basically saying "I'd rather risk my kid dying of a preventable disease than risk my kid having autism".

I mean, not that it even has any basis in reality, but it's basically the mentality.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well maybe if the vaccine did cause autism then she'd have some support, but they don't.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-09-15 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yet she has support in spite of that, because people THINK vaccines cause autism, even though they don't.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
But McCarthy is literally the one spreading those lies. Like, she is the one taking advantage of ignorant (often poor) individuals.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-09-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
But does she herself believe it, I wonder?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely she would be far more evil if she didn't believe it?
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-09-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course! I can't say I kept super up to date with it, but the few times I saw her she seemed to genuinely believe her own crap...which does make it a bit different for me.
