This is honestly always what bothered me and why I tend to bitch about SJW's and "trigger warnings".

It's not because I don't think those things are real - it's because someone wanting a trigger for pomegranates or whatever (yes, that is a real case) absolutely devalues real-life trauma (and mental illness in general).

Anyway, OP, I'm sorry about your brother and I hope he's getting help. Be there for him, if you can.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
To me one of the biggest problems with the tumblr mentality of 'trigger warnings' is they really make no distinction from 'this is a thing that can trigger people' and 'this is a bad thing'

So you get two camps going on of "The phrase 'dynamite gal' isn't a bad phrase! It's not a real trigger! How can that be a real trigger? It's such an innocent phrase." and the "Anyone who supports it being ok for people to just spout off 'dynamite gal' like it's nothing are abusive and horrible. It's a gross abusive phrase."

When the reality is "Because of past traumatic events this phrase is triggering to this one specific person and does legitimately hurt them, so it's good for people to make reasonable accommodations for this person, but yes for everyone else it's just an innocent phrase."

THIS IS AN ACTUAL CW LIST FROM A FB GROUP (what happened here?)

Content Warnings: What They Are and How to Use Them

We use content warnings (CW for short) to warn people when the content of a post might cause an extremely strong negative emotional response or a flashback to a traumatic experience, or provoke a phobia. To keep this a safe space for everyone, when you are writing about anything related to one of these warnings in a post or a comment, please write "CW: [name]" as its own line at the beginning, followed by ten lines of dots or dashes like this.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
so that the post goes under a “read more” cut. That way, people who are affected by these topics can avoid the post while everyone else can continue with the discussion. Please also delete preview images for topics on the list such as specific animals, extreme weather, or gore.

The following is a list of topics that people in the group have asked to be placed on the list. This means that these aren’t “guesses” – they’re real, important concerns and need to be tagged with a warning beforehand (common or otherwise). The CWs have been categorized to help people remember what types of content need warnings, but it is important to write the specific CW when tagging a post or comment. (For example, CW: Violence [assualt]) If you forget to tag a post, don’t worry, we won’t blow up at you; we simply ask that you not make the same mistake again. [Note: When giving a reminder, it helps to be polite. A simple, "Hey, could you please CW for 'fill in the blank'" works just fine]

If you'd like to add something to the list, please contact a {redatcted}(admin), and we will add it to the list without questioning you or asking why. We ask that you imagine people complexly here - everyone has had different experiences and others may not have the advantages that you do, so out of trust and respect to everyone in {redatcted}, please don't post in the group asking for explanations of why certain topics are listed. If you do have questions, feel free to contact {redatcted} and we will answer them to the best of our ability! Additionally, if a topic is not on the list, it does not need a CW (unless a new CW is requested for the topic) and we ask that people don't use unnecessary CWs, as it has the effect of trivializing the system.

Do I even want to know what the issue is with this?

Wow. So...how exactly do people handle any discussion of, or encounters with, any of this stuff in places offline, where content warnings aren't going to be as readily available?

I'm still not sure what's so triggering about the 1992 summer olympics.

"...and we ask that people don't use unnecessary CWs, as it has the effect of trivializing the system."

OK

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, it's not that pomegranates can't be a trigger to someone, it's expecting the entire internet to turn around and cater to your needs rather than protecting yourself. If you ask your small flist to please not post pomegranates, that's okay because you're building a community norm. If you expect the whole of the internet to tag for everything ever, then no.

The pomegranate thing was pretty weird because it wasn't even about the pomegranate itself, but rather because some person thought the picture of an opened pomegranate looked like gore and wanted the OP to tag the pomegranate for gore.

Oh god I remember that incident!
