I'm sorry to hear about your brother, OP.

I need to watch TFA already so I can get on this Reylo boat. If the SJ tumblrites hate it so much, I reckon it'll hit all my kinks.

If you want some recs, let me know. I've got a bunch depending if you want Star Wars universe or modern universe. (And if you're up for, there's a few Reylux that are good too)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I am interested in the Reylux.

Thanks! I'm sure if I do end up watching, I'll be here screaming for recs. I think I'd get into Reylux, too. Maybe even more because god I love Domhnall Gleeson.

Just wanted to tell you how relaxing it is to read the answer of a pro-Reylo text that isn't "please stop supporting abuse"

There are plenty outright bastards on the Reylo side of things as well though. Assholes all around.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking as a Reylo shipper, I bowed out of most online fandom because of all the drama around the ship.

There's nastiness all over TFA fandom and it got to be too much for me.

So sorry to hear about what your brother's going through.

This is honestly always what bothered me and why I tend to bitch about SJW's and "trigger warnings".

It's not because I don't think those things are real - it's because someone wanting a trigger for pomegranates or whatever (yes, that is a real case) absolutely devalues real-life trauma (and mental illness in general).

Anyway, OP, I'm sorry about your brother and I hope he's getting help. Be there for him, if you can.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
To me one of the biggest problems with the tumblr mentality of 'trigger warnings' is they really make no distinction from 'this is a thing that can trigger people' and 'this is a bad thing'

So you get two camps going on of "The phrase 'dynamite gal' isn't a bad phrase! It's not a real trigger! How can that be a real trigger? It's such an innocent phrase." and the "Anyone who supports it being ok for people to just spout off 'dynamite gal' like it's nothing are abusive and horrible. It's a gross abusive phrase."

When the reality is "Because of past traumatic events this phrase is triggering to this one specific person and does legitimately hurt them, so it's good for people to make reasonable accommodations for this person, but yes for everyone else it's just an innocent phrase."

Well, yeah, it's not that pomegranates can't be a trigger to someone, it's expecting the entire internet to turn around and cater to your needs rather than protecting yourself. If you ask your small flist to please not post pomegranates, that's okay because you're building a community norm. If you expect the whole of the internet to tag for everything ever, then no.

Just another reminder that you don't need to be in the military or in combat to suffer PTSD. Anyone that claims otherwise is just a milstan.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You still don't get PTSD from dumb or mean comments on twitter.

The people on tumblr are majority sheltered brats who have no life experience to get triggered by. They think they have triggers because they world doesn't revolve around them or because they don't feel comfortable when people have different opinions than them. That is certainly not fucking PTSD. Worst is the people who lie about it in an attempt to make people feel guilty about their harmless fandom fun.

I was going to post this. Thanks for doing it for me!

No, I was never in the military or combat, but did suffer a traumatic brain injury (slip/trip/fall) that basically ripped all of life as I knew it away from me. Followed by a car accident a few years later that would have been fatal if I had not been so desperate to protect my head from getting hurt again.

I try not to be mean, but I think a lot of the people who claim to be triggered by, say, oranges, would crumble in the face of my flashbacks.

Yep. I have PTSD related to cancer, namely losing several family members over the span of about eight years to it, and being one of the main caretakers for the most recent one, who was my father. I had never thought about it in terms of PTSD until I finally started seeing my shrink and she told me that was absolutely what it was. As weird as it sounds, it really helped a lot to know what the hell was going on in my brain.

Personally, I really can't stand the Reylo ship one bit and yet all the bullshit the haters pull make me sympathise with the shippers.

Bit like "I hate your ship but I will defend your right to ship it without getting harrassed".

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well put :D. Yeah, there's pairings that aren't really my bag, either, but if I ever run into discussion or fic and so on about them, I just...scroll on past. I don't get why that's such a hard thing for some people to do.

I follow the same principle really, like sure there are ships I do not like and don't want to see but I'm not about to stop anyone from shipping them. Besides I don't go into the tag or follow anyone who ships things I don't like so I basically never see it. It's really not hard to manage, but then I think some people just like to feed on drama so they go looking for trouble.

(I have one person I follow who occasionally posts a ship I don't care for, but I like her other posts and said ship doesn't come up that often anyway so I have it blacklisted for when it does, remarkably life goes on).

Ugh, people throw words about trauma around like it's candy.

People think because they don't like something that it's a 'trigger' for them when it's simply just something they don't like. I'm guessing they just like to call it traumatic in order to shame others for liking it or because they feel having some justification makes their opinions more valid.

I just don't get how someone else shipping something (and finding enjoyment in it) effects them in any way. If something 'triggers' them then just... don't indulge in it. The back button or tab close is your best friend.

well here's the thing: if you ask people to warn for squicks they can refuse and tell you to just unfollow. if they refuse trigger warning they're the scum of the earth and free to be harassed because WOW, what if someone just stumbles on their content and gets triggered?

you make warnings a moral choice instead of a personal one. bingo.
