Also, mowing lawns. Why does grass need to look manicured? Unless you're actually intending to play on the grass, I suppose, but long, natural grass is lovely. It's kind of strange that we value snipping every blade of grass in sight.

At least where I live (just outside of some woods), if you let the grass grow too much, then you get bugs and snakes in the grass. Chiggers are the absolute worst! Plus the tall grass invite other animals like deer and groundhogs to take up residence.

Well, if grass is just left alone it can start to get full of weeds and look sloppy. It does look neater and nicer when it's clipped, and it's much easier to use that lawn space for play, picnics, hanging out, etc.

It's an appearance issue. You could argue that lawns themselves are a sign of classism, but that doesn't change the fact that a mowed lawn makes your house look better.

long, unkept grass and greenery will also attract every goddamned pest in the neighborhood, from roaches to rats. which is why you can be served a citation by the local government to either cut your grass or pay a hefty fine.

It's less its looks and more the issues associated with long grass (hidden trash, vermins and such).

Because grass likes being clipped short and most other plants don't so clipping it is a good way to keep a weed-moat around your house. Otherwise you blink and the kudzu is ripping apart your porch.

Screw the fact that it's a "grass manicure". Some of us don't need mice and rats. We also don't need chiggers and ticks preying on us. But most of all, fuck grass getting higher than it needs to be to make WAY TOO MUCH FUCKING POLLEN.

Like others have said, lawns that grow too long make a house look unkempt and often end up being homes for critters you might not want around your kids and/or pets. Also, I have to keep the grass short or my dachshund won't go in it to do his business, 'cause it tickles his belly and he doesn't like that.

The fact that it "looks unkempt" is what I object to. Longer grass looks beautiful and natural. And those critters are living in your lawn whether or not you mow.

not really. mice are going to avoid spaces where they can't hide.

You think there are no mice in mowed lawns?

Considering the amount of mice my cat catches, that is very much not the case.

Animals are more drawn to places where they can hide. That's why you usually don't see mice, snakes or any other animal just chilling in short grass. They prefer hiding places. Long grass makes an excellent hiding place.

Keeping your lawn short will deter pest, or straight up dangerous, animals from making a home in your yard where you, or pets and children, could accidentally run into them.

I guess the unkempt part is just a matter of personal taste, but as for the critters, there are less places for them to hide in short grass, and you're more likely to see animals like snakes coming and aren't as likely to step on them by accident. Also, as far as ticks and other small, bitey bugs go, it's easier for them to crawl up your legs in longer grass.

I hear you on the visual aesthetics but as a new homeowner who has to mow the lawn for the first time in my life, I appreciate a mowed lawn because it keeps the rabbits and gophers from taking up residence (fucking rabbits eating my hostas goddammit) and yes, prevents ticks and other nuisance insects from moving in. It's nice to keep the lawn a little long because then it shades itself and prevents drying and encourages drought-resistance, but the species of grass we have as lawns does better with clipping.

Now, if there's something you want to be baffled about, be baffled by watering lawns to keep them green. Grass is pretty fucking resilient, it goes dormant when there's not enough water and springs right back later, it doesn't need to be watered.

Well,
1. Don't want to stand out from all the other reasonably neat manicured grass
2. Long grass tends to get into cracks and damage cement/walls/bricks etc
3. Snakes, long grass attracts snakes...and mice...and roaches...and generally things I don't want in the house.
