Like others have said, lawns that grow too long make a house look unkempt and often end up being homes for critters you might not want around your kids and/or pets. Also, I have to keep the grass short or my dachshund won't go in it to do his business, 'cause it tickles his belly and he doesn't like that.

The fact that it "looks unkempt" is what I object to. Longer grass looks beautiful and natural. And those critters are living in your lawn whether or not you mow.

not really. mice are going to avoid spaces where they can't hide.

You think there are no mice in mowed lawns?

Considering the amount of mice my cat catches, that is very much not the case.

Animals are more drawn to places where they can hide. That's why you usually don't see mice, snakes or any other animal just chilling in short grass. They prefer hiding places. Long grass makes an excellent hiding place.

Keeping your lawn short will deter pest, or straight up dangerous, animals from making a home in your yard where you, or pets and children, could accidentally run into them.

I guess the unkempt part is just a matter of personal taste, but as for the critters, there are less places for them to hide in short grass, and you're more likely to see animals like snakes coming and aren't as likely to step on them by accident. Also, as far as ticks and other small, bitey bugs go, it's easier for them to crawl up your legs in longer grass.
