Awards shows. I don't understand why we as a society are supposed to think the Oscars mean anything. They voter base is super limited to largely elderly white dudes & projects campaign for Oscars by sending the voter base crazy extravagant gifts as a means of saying "Pick me, pick me!"

Also funerals & baptisms. I don't understand why funerals are treated as sad, somber occasions where you have to wear black. (Caveat: Unless the deceased is incredibly young and the death was unexpected. I get that.) Overall though, funerals are supposed to be a celebration of a life lived. I personally would prefer it if everyone wore their own favorite color to my funeral & remembered me as I lived- ridiculously and with lots of laughter. And with baptisms...what kind of fucked up Christian mythology tells parents that if their newborn baby dies in infacy before you've doused their head with holy water, committing them to a religion they can't actually consent to, that their soul will rest in Purgatory. I mean, that's really fucked, honestly.

The funerals I've been to had a more serious church service and then a reception that was more like a party where people ate stuff and shared fun stories of the people who died.

idk, I think awards shows have an effect. Not long-term (as evidenced by the common complaint of "no one even remembers what won 30 years ago"), but they do influence what movies people see right after they are nominated. Look at the huge box office for American Sniper right after it was nominated, or all the people who rented Grand Budapest Hotel. Yes it's an extremely small base and fairly meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but there are also a lot of movies out there and not much time, and I think the reason society cares about awards is because it's someone semi-official saying "We endorse these movies" (and for some people, that endorsement is reason to stay away from a movie, so it's still acting as a culling system!)

Also, it is fun to watch them and see all the outfits and come up with drinking games.

That's fair.

History lesson - people used to get baptized on their deathbed, since baptism is your one free chance to wipe the slate clean, so to speak.

While I'm not a Christian and agree the mythological idea of baptism is silly, practically speaking, they tend to just be an excuse to celebrate a new baby with the family. Usually they are followed by small parties with cake and such, and I think most people are more interested in that than the religious motions.

Uh, my impression was that getting baptized on one's deathbed was an unusual situation, not a common one. Perhaps you mean something like receiving the last rites, but that's not the same thing as a baptism.

Nope, I meant what I said.

It wasn't normal to baptize infants until the early medieval period. The late Roman period, deathbed baptism was very common.

On baptisms, well I agree when it comes to baby christenings, because I grew up in a church that believed in baptisms being done in a child's teen years at the earliest - old enough to actually understand the religious meaning involved in it. My church does have "dedications", but that is always said to be more about the parents of a newborn promising to raise their child well.

I also don't believe in Purgatory, or even Hell, really.

If my brother dies first, I'm supposed to hire a comic for the funeral. They won't know it's a funeral.
