History lesson - people used to get baptized on their deathbed, since baptism is your one free chance to wipe the slate clean, so to speak.

While I'm not a Christian and agree the mythological idea of baptism is silly, practically speaking, they tend to just be an excuse to celebrate a new baby with the family. Usually they are followed by small parties with cake and such, and I think most people are more interested in that than the religious motions.

Uh, my impression was that getting baptized on one's deathbed was an unusual situation, not a common one. Perhaps you mean something like receiving the last rites, but that's not the same thing as a baptism.

Nope, I meant what I said.

It wasn't normal to baptize infants until the early medieval period. The late Roman period, deathbed baptism was very common.
