Honestly my biggest beef with it is they recast the roles. If they were dudes no-one would blink an eye at them being older.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing it that way would be a very different show. and would have been for male characters as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not blink an eye but I sure would cringe at Kevin Sorbo being Hercules again. It's not just women.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, but how much of that is because Kevin Sorbo is Kevin Sorbo? It's kind of a tricky comparison.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's both, really.

I wouldn't have minded a continuation where the characters are older in-world, but a reboot of the original with a 50 year old warrior princess is not quite the same thing. It'd be an interesting thing imo, but not the same.

THIS

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I kind of cringe when I see Kevin Sorbo in anything.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
True that. I wouldn't mind his younger self being more campy Herc though. Trying to imagine his older self doing seriously as a reboot it is way worse.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I mean... That's like comparing apples to oranges.
He had a meltdown because Xena was getting a reboot and Hercules wasn't and now he's making some "what happens when the most devout atheist discovers God is real" Christian movie.
Kevin Sorbo hasn't been part of the equation for a loooong while.

If Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone are still considered ok action movie material, why isn't Lucy Lawless action tv material? She isn't even 50, is in *great* shape and has performed action stunts very recently.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucy Lawless should definitely be considered action hero material. That doesn't mean she should be in a new Xena series.

Yep, exactly.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I would've been totally up for seeing a continuation of the series rather than a reboot.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
That would have been cool, too! I kinda get the feeling a lot of people heard reboot and thought continuation. I'm happy either way but hope the wank dies down by the time we actually get to see it.

Nah, sorry. Adventuring is for the young, there comes a point where soft furnishings, afternoon naps, and knees that don't ache in the damp take precedence over running around in the forest and that age starts around 40-45. I know Kevin Sorbo was older as Hercules, but he got real lucky with his face and 1990s makeup techniques. I don't think he could get away with it these days.

Dude, I'm pretty sure 40 is not when people retire and do afternoon naps. And Sorbo is ten years older than Lawless.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not 40 yet but I'm within pitching distance of it, and I've already started the afternoon napping.

DA. Depends on the person. I know people have said that Lucy Lawless is in great shape, but at 40+ your body stops healing as fast and takes injuries harder. There's a reason most professional athletes retire before they hit that age. Doesn't make it impossible for someone to be that physically active with no problems, but it does make it less likely. And less likely = less believable, at least in this case (a character on TV).

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 41 and I've been feeling my age really creep up on me lately. I have actually taken to napping in the early evenings on occasion.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
My body started falling apart pretty much literally the instant I hit 40. (I'm 42 now.) Plantar Faciitis, kidney stones, needing reading glasses, and just generally being slower and not dealing as well with exhaustion and recovery from strenuous things.

Could someone be in amazing shape and be a warrior princess well into their 40s? Sure. My cousin is 10 years older than I am and still a ridiculously fit Marine. But it is less likely and bodies definitely do tend to start to age a lot at 40. As the other anon said, there is a reason pro athletes tend to retire younger.

I work nights and sleep all day, does that count? I'm only 33, but I do love a good nap on my days off.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but bamfy old people in fiction who can still do the same shit as a 20-year-old without being bothered by any creaking joints, bad eyesight, heart problems etc. is a nice fantasy.

Ahem. Some of us have knees that ache AND YET we run around in the forest. I'll even cavort naked with a faun if there's one about.

Tell that to my OH who has just qualified as a centurion [100 miles in under 24 hours]aged 70

Ageist idiot. Just because you can't do it (or are some young tyke who thinks everyone over 40 is over the hill) doesn't make it a rule.

Agreed. Lucy Lawless was amazing in the recent Evil Dead series. There's a trend for rebooting with ever younger actors - Fantastic Four's next outing will have to take place in preschool.

Fantastic Four was rediculous, I'm still not over whiny gloomy teen Doom.
