reboot?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah they're making a new version where they're canon queer

We haven't heard anything about it in months, though, so who knows.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Google has lots more info if you want to find out more.

Yeah, but most of the "confirmed" content itself is rumours running wild from a couple of interviews.

Honestly my biggest beef with it is they recast the roles. If they were dudes no-one would blink an eye at them being older.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing it that way would be a very different show. and would have been for male characters as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not blink an eye but I sure would cringe at Kevin Sorbo being Hercules again. It's not just women.

I would've been totally up for seeing a continuation of the series rather than a reboot.

Nah, sorry. Adventuring is for the young, there comes a point where soft furnishings, afternoon naps, and knees that don't ache in the damp take precedence over running around in the forest and that age starts around 40-45. I know Kevin Sorbo was older as Hercules, but he got real lucky with his face and 1990s makeup techniques. I don't think he could get away with it these days.

Agreed. Lucy Lawless was amazing in the recent Evil Dead series. There's a trend for rebooting with ever younger actors - Fantastic Four's next outing will have to take place in preschool.

buck up, anon. maybe they won't be a couple from the beginning and there will be hot af slow build and UST for 3 seasons first.

one can dream?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Please make this

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I'd love that if I knew for sure they were paid through 4 seasons. Otherwise I'm afraid I'd get two seasons of UST and then cancelled and 20 years of fans fighting over "But they were GOING to be a couple" and "Death of the author! They're just gals being pals in canon!"

Ughh, same here. Actual media romance always makes me roll my eyes, no matter what the sexual orientation of the couple. Give me tension and subtext any day!

[personal profile] crossy_woad 2016-09-20 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know! It's like whether the actors have chemistry or not, they're, "Hey, let's DO IT! I LUV U TRULLLEEE but we fight all the time and break up a lot too!!!" With subtext, it's all about chemistry and there's no faking that IMO
ketita: (Default)

[personal profile] ketita 2016-09-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I like subtext more also. In the event that the ship sucks I can ignore it, and then you don't have bullshit soap opera-esque off and on bullshit. Very few TV romances are actually well done.

Yeah, subtext is always my favorite part too whether the pairing is het or slash. It's most shows wait years to get their will-they-won't-they couple together because it's usually the beginning of the end.

Like you I think it's great that there are more canon gay characters and pairings. But it would also be really cool if ships were just allowed to happen because writers know the audience wants it. Some shows have certain pairings with supposed UST written in from day 1, but with a lot of others it's something that viewers notice and it sort of snowballs from there. And for straight pairings there's the possibility of it becoming canon, while for slash I'm not really sure it's ever happened.

I hate that I missed out on this! I think I need to watch it, it sounds like my exact type of show - I'm just worried it's a little dated. But the original was targeted toward adults anyway, right? Anyone know where one can legally watch it, where it streams?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's on Netflix, at least in the US. Not sure about whether it's available in othe countries though.

Well...if you have a tv antenna (I know, who even has that any more (me because I'm too cheap for anything else)), H&I channel shows it most weeknights. I'm actually watching it right now, this post was perfect timing :p.

Yeah, some of it is dated, but it's entertaining and I kinda wish they still made shows like it.

I think it's like having an inside joke with the audience, that's why it's a bit sad that it will be gone.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww! It makes me happy to know that Xena and Gabby will finally be an official couple, even if played by different actresses.

It makes sense-- I mean... like, there's something really special about something that's sort of... lovingly queer-coded? When you grew up in a time where you couldn't just see openly lgbtq characters having adventures unrelated to their sexuality and enjoying happy endings if they existed at all, you kind of cling to those stories and characters that wink at you, and the feeling that you're in on something secret that was put there just for you.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. As much as I have been happy in the last decade to see canon lesbians pop up more, I actually prefer subtext most of the time. (Even with hetero relationships - but mostly gay ones because they still feel like something special, and while I'm totally in favor of being gay becoming something really normal, I don't really like fictional relationships that are "normal", because that's boring. So I kinda hope that homosexuality characters will retain a bit of their specialness and difference in fictional works.
