To me, it depends on the social norms? I tend to like politeness, but I wouldn't say all social norms are harmless.

Honestly, going by your above example, I think we're going to disagree on this one. Unless you know someone and actually want to talk about your issues, if a stranger/acquaintance/co-worker/whatever asks "how are you", please for the love of god don't tell me how you actually feel. It is the worst when you're just trying to build a nice, but neutral rapport with someone and they go on about their life's problems after a simple "how are you" or "what's up".

See, but that's the thing. Most of the time I don't want a "nice neutral rapport". I'm not going to go into detail about my life problems, but I'm also not saying "good" if it's not true. I'll probably going to say something like "well, it could be better" or "well, I'm alive" if it's a truly shit day.

... is it not okay to say "oh, so stressed, my unit is so busy today- how are you?" in work setting?
I wouldn't pour my personal problems out on someone, but if people don't want even surface level interaction with me they shouldn't ask. And if I asked someone and they told me something personal they were preoccupied with I wouldn't be bothered. It's happened to me before.

Certainly, to some people. Absolutely not to a customer, or not to someone who is just asking in passing and doesn't actually have the time to commit any sympathy to you.

Or how about "come up with a more appropriate opener than 'how are you' if you don't, in fact, give a fuck how the other person really is?" If you want a neutral rapport, ask a neutral question. "How are you?" is anything but neutral; it's a fucking Pandora's Box.

You are exactly the kind of pedantic person I was talking about.

If hating it when fake-ass people ask me a question and expect a lie for an answer makes me "pedantic" then fine, guilty as charged. I'll tattoo it on my goddamn forehead just so I can avoid people like you a lot easier.

Oppositional, pedantic outrage. Yep, you sound like a joy to be around. I am surely missing out on your company.
