That the first question out of peoples' mouths when meeting new people is "what do you do?" I make a point of trying to avoid asking that one, first thing, opting for interests and hobbies or what brought them here.

Yeah. And the late teens, early twenty-something version: "Where do you go to school?" I had a friend who was forced to drop out because of financial problems and personal stress (in retrospect, I think she would've been happier going to trade school), and it was always awkward because people would ask, and the truth embarrassed her.

I mean, obviously if it's mentioned, it's a reasonable question. But otherwise...

Definitely awkward. It's one thing if the person brings it up, themselves, but to put someone on the spot with that question is just terribly thoughtless at best.

I'm thirty and for a while it felt like everytime i did something with my mom, people would ask me if I was in school. I'm fine with brushing them off, but it made me feel weird.

That's a good policy, I like that.

I've been getting that question when unemployed and in a generally bad place, enough times that I'd hate to put someone else through that.

You. I like you. I dislike getting asked that question because I'm having major troubles finishing my degree during to depression and some other family related troubles and I don't really like to talk about it. And yet, three is always that one person who likes to dig their claws in exactly that topic and won't shut up about it. (Even after I give a generic answer AND after I tell them I don't really want to talk about it.)
