No they're not but there's a lot of delicious food descriptions and also a lot of people die.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-22 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
aaaaaaaaaand, that's why I'm glad for the show

because I enjoy the show, but could not slog through the books. And I do mean slog. It was so hard to try and read book 1.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts, too, OP. It lacked likable characters, and I found it over the top when it wasn't dull.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the first book, haven't read any of the others. Of course, I can't stand traditional epic fantasy, so to me GOT was like a breath of fresh air.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't a huge fan of them either. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of the fantasy genre in general so that may be why.
The obnoxious and creepy fanbase didn't help much either.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
They do some interesting things, plot and character wise, in the specific space of multiple volume epic fantasy. And some people find them entertaining and engrossing, I guess.

I love the characters, but no so much "like", more like I admire their complexity. But, I gave up on the books, I prefer the series, I find the writing tedious in general.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, exactly.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-22 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
After reading a ton of experts from the books of Geroge R.R. Martin creeply describing the breasts of multiple underage female characters, I was pretty turned off and decided that the series wasn't worth checking out. From the sound of it, it doesn't seem like I'm missing much.

I think the biggest problem for me was that so many of the characters are unlikable in this series that it made it hard for me to carry on caring when the characters I did like were inevitably offed.

But I don't mind the series for what it is, and the show is easier for me to take in since I can easily skip the bits I don't like.

This was why I quit after book 1, basically. That and all the sex/rape/death.
And I have to agree on the originality thing - people act like there's never been anything like this, like nobody's ever subverted anything in the fantasy world until this came along, which is blatantly untrue.
It's fine if people enjoy it, but stop preaching about it, yeesh.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Whenever I mention I don't like all the rape and sexual assault in the books, book, (and sometimes tv) fans always go nuts and get on my ass because excessive rape is apparently ""realistic.""
Ignoring the fact that dragons, ice zombies, and decade long seasons exist in the same universe lmao.

[personal profile] ketita 2016-09-23 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ughhhh that fucking excuse grinds my gears so bad.
Like you said, nothing there is fucking "realistic", so why the rape obsession? (I mean, I know why, it's just gross).
You know what else is realistic? Farting. Diarrhea. Weird stains in underwear. Furuncles. Poor mouth hygiene. Yet somehow we never get tons of loving descriptions of these! Astonishing.

Lol agreed - I got my master's in medieval history, and the "realistic" claim is just so frustrating. It's not any more inherently realistic than the good, selfless hero conquering darkness, it's skewed to the other side. Believe it or not, not all medieval women were raped, not everyone was tortured to death. Sometimes, life was actually okay, just like it was sometimes shitty.

This so much. Fantasy has been subverted since the beginning of its existence. Fantasy has had "dark" and "realistic" stuff since it began. I'm happy people like them, but it pisses me off when people act like they are the only ones to ever do these things or that having lots of sex somehow makes them better than other things that don't have lots of sex.

They work for me and I've found plenty of likable characters, or course it sucks when bad things happen to them for no reason and you're waiting for characters you don't like to get their comeuppance (I just finished the 2nd book).

I loved the first book and thought the rest were enjoyable but not great. To me they aren't fantasy enough, but they are still mostly enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoy some of the characters but the books really are such a painful read. I'm halfway through book two and I've read over two dozen other books since picking up the series a month ago. The biggest problem I have is with the frequency of POV changes; I'm jarred at the beginning of every chapter (and often dreading it because I don't like that chapter's character), and just as I'm getting into what's happening that chapter is over and it's a new POV. I can't get any rhythm while reading and I doubt I'll continue with the books when I finish book two.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
They're not terribly original, no. It's a scramble for power and/or survival, there just happens to be a couple of dragons and witches and zombies about but there are a ton of fantasy books out there that do fantasy better. And nah, they're not beautifully written - well enough but nothing special. I am fond of a lot of the characters, though, I'm not gonna lie to you.

I LOVED the first three books, read them in 2001, the wait for AFFC almost killed me and for what?? Nothing, that book was such a disappointment. Then ADWD came out years later, I forgot I had preordered it and was surprised one day with the package on my door, I read 2 sentences and had to quit -- I was so done with GRRM's writing style. Still, I caught up via online summaries and discussion.

Because, goddamnit, i am invested in this world and simply must know what happens to Sansa, Littlefinger, Jaime, and Brienne.. Only then can my soul be at peace.

Yeah. I didn't like his writing style and would have put away the first book right after finishing the first chapter. But I was camping and didn't have anything else with me, so I read up until page 500 - then the weekend was over, and I never touched the books again. *g*

(Anonymous) 2016-09-23 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I like them well enough, but I was never particularly impressed with the writing style, and I actually think the show did a better job with some of the characters.

Glad to see someone agrees. I tried reading the books at some point, but Martin's prose is just... not very good IMO. He's a good storyteller, I give him that, but his style is just clunky and pretentious IMO. Except when he's writing action, death and carnage. And sometimes even then.

Also, it's painfully obvious he "borrowed" a LOT from Tad Williams (he does have the decency to admit it, at least) - and as someone who counts Memory, Sorrow and Thorn among her favourites, I'm a little bummed that the subtler, more original and IMHO overall better written "source of his inspiration" is barely known at all.
