People complain about obnoxious tags so much...I get they're kind of a pain, and yeah "#this made me cry while writing it prepare to sob so hard your anus ruptures" is dumb, it's not...that much of a detractor from the overall experience?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Those tags are kind of useful in a way because usually fics that are tagged like that aren't very good, so I know right off the bat not to waste time on them

I was gonna say something similar tbh. I few errant tags ("#goat farm #why is this already a tag?" is my fav) make me happy, and a lot tell me to steer clear. :P

Exactly. They are great indicators that I should keep scrolling, when I'm looking for fic.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, tumblr-style tags don't bother me at all.

What bothers me is people who tag with a million actual canonical tags so their stupid fic shows up no matter what you search. Especially when combined with the old every-drabble-I've-written-across-30-fandoms thing.

Yes, this is ridiculous. Especially in AO3. No, I do not need to know every single character from the damn series is in the story. No, I don't want you to tell me everyone in the universe is hooking up. Leave some shit unspoiled FFS.

Yeah, I'm kinda baffled by people who get SO UPSET about people overusing "Tumblr-style" tags. If there's a huge blob of tags, I generally just skim them. No big deal.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
idk why this is a secret tbh. I think it's a great idea and everyone should do it. It honestly makes your fandom experience so much better

and yeah, I really hate it when author's tell readers how to feel in the tags or whatever. bitch, I'll feel what I want to feel. I can determine whether or not a fic makes me cry all by myself, thanks

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
^ THIS

No author can direct my emotional response to their fic. You want me to cry over your work? Then write something sad enough to break my heart, don't write a mini-essay in your tags about how OMG SAD your story is.

This is the secret you're saying that to? lol

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
discovering someone forked tumblr savior for ao3 has been the best part of my fandom experience

never again to I have to see authors who post those horrible mega crossovers or tag their fics like it's tumblr

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Blacklisting seems extreme.

But I get being totally annoyed when authors tend to overhype their own stories, or manipulate readers' reactions before they've even gotten into the fic.

I don't take tags seriously though, for some reason. I blame Twitter and Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No it is legit. Those writers are shit and they are also trying to emotionally blackmail the reader into reading out of pity most of the time, or just fishing for woobie-internet-hugs. If someone cannot write a simple synopsis, or they have to ladle on every tag ever, then their writing is shit and black listing them so you don't have to deal with their crap on every search is a valid tool.

If you want to avoid the black list then drill your summary down to about twitter length, add in the genre, the main three characters, pairing if it is not-gen, and keep any tags (dark fic, oc, NSFW) simple and descriptive. It is that easy.

I barely read tags, except to check for the pairing I like and to be sure it's not some 'this fic will lovingly detail every single moment of improbable torture-rape character a lived through'.

Otherwise, i mostly just skim them and ignore. Dunno why it's such a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably weren't going to leave comments or kudos anyway, so I'm not sure why writers would give a fuck, but good for you!

I don't generally read fic on tumblr, so it's possible that I would agree with you on this wrt specifically to fic (since certain kinds of tags/descriptions for fic do tend to align with bad fic), but in general I actually like ridiculous tags on tumblr. I don't follow anyone who is All Srs Bzns All The Time about fandom though, which might affect it as well. I can see where ridiculous tags posted by someone who thinks they are being super cereal about everything would get old.

#Lik Dis If U Cry Evertim

But seriously that's a good idea and I might apply it on my next fic search.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I like the way you roll, OP. Because yeah, people who tend to spam the ridiculous Tumblr way of tagging on AO3 tend to make me pass on their fic.

A few clarifications(?) from OP

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
AO3 savior is my favorite, and this secret was mostly regarding my use of it (it's hard to be obnoxious in the like 15 characters ff.net gives you, and on tumblr the people on your dash are ones you want to be there).

I actually don't mind tumblr-style tags overmuch, if they're informative about the content of the fic and they don't bloat the tag box to half the screen. The author oversharing stuff about themselves is irritating, because that's what author notes are for.

Everyone gets second chances when AO3 savior updates and deletes all your terms and you don't realize until you wonder why all those "Major Character Death" fics are turning up again. But they're gonna go back on the list if they're still being obnoxious.

Fandom and fic is my happy leisure space, and I try to be proactive about keeping my experience full of things that I enjoy, absent of things I do not enjoy, and limiting the number of trivial, but grating, annoyances.

Honestly, I 100% support you here.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Wait. You can blacklist on AO3?!

Please tell me how.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ao3 savior! A fork of tumblr savior, works as a browser extension through Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey or similar. It allows you to blacklist by tag, author, word/phrase in summary, and specific work title. You can also whitelist tags. Gives an option to show or not show a placeholder where a work is hidden (placeholder can be clicked open to see the work), and give or not give the reason why the work was hidden.

In the screenshot from the secret, both placeholders and reasons are turned on. If a work was blocked by tag, it would give only the first blacklisted tag.
