Yanno, this just made me realize that i've never seen anyone really complain about this age difference like they do for Padme and Anakin.

Probably because this isn't canon.

Weird tangent over.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not just that it's non-canon, but also that Padme/Anakin has to reckon with the actually-existing creepy, weird, poorly-written romantic dialogue, whereas the romantic dialogue for this ship exists only in your head. It's not like the script plays down the age gap the way that you would expect, you know?

lmao the dialogue! TNT has the rights to play the first six movies and has been doing so for like the past four days and I watched Clones and Revenge.

It is hilariously awful, but I have to admit, my favorite line in any Star Wars film has to be "I've been dying a little bit each day since you came back into my life - I love you."

I WISH I COULD WISH AWAY MY FEELINGS.

WE LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD, ANAKIN. COME BACK TO IT.

I unironically love how terrible the romantic dialogue is between Anakin and Padme. It's exactly the kind of ridiculousness I would expect from two fairly young people who have literally no idea how dating works but think they are being incredibly romantic.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
>unironically
That's your first problem.

Liking terrible things makes you and your taste-level terrible and there's nothing ironic about that. This is why I hate stupid shippers.

Yeah, I kind of agree. It sort of makes sense that they'd be awful at being actually romantic. And for myself, I kind of reject the idea of there being a thing which is "universally romantic". I think romance depends on the people and what's meaningful to them. Which... I mean in this case it's still kind of ridiculous XD

They don't? But it's so amazingly bizarre and creepy that Padme is all 'Queen blah blah' and adulting all over the place, and next thing you know, she's banging the little kid she...rescued or whatever. I always thought it was pretty meh.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Poe didn't meet Finn when they were a teenager and a child. They're both grown men.

I should have clarified, I mean Anakin and Obiwan. I wasn't even thinking about Stormpilot.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't complain because it's two men.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I find both ships a little creepy. It doesn't do to say so, though, unless you want the shipper lynch mob on your tail.

[personal profile] morieris 2016-09-24 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I do ship Anidala (because I was talking about them and didn't clarify) and definitely get how people find that strange.

I mean, in the end it didn't work out so I don't feel weird about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, you should still feel weird about it. No free passes, pedo.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
cool brah

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen some people complain about this ship's age difference and calling it highly abusive and problematic. And that all Master/Padawan ships are abusive and problematic.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen that. The minute a real life padawan comes forward to talk about his Jedi master being abusive, I'll give it serious consideration. (And not just weirdos who like LARPing)
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-09-25 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Abusive? No. Student/teacher relationships (while fine in fanon/fic, don't care) are actually pretty messed up IRL though. Power balance issues etc. Not really having anything to do with age specifically though unless one is actually a child.

I guess I'm curious as to what exactly was being said and how. There's shipping something, and then there's implying that thing would actually be ok outside of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
the antis didn't cite a specific fic or anything or event or whatever, they were literally just hating on the ship as a whole. the people hating were calling the obikin ship itself abusive, as well as Master/Padawan (specifically using those terms) as abusive. as far as i know, real life wasn't mentioned at all, except in terms of 'this fictional thing you're enjoying is glorifying this real life crime and these real life survivors are being damaged by this thing.'

lmao and i gotta say, it's pretty funny that you're explaining to me that student/teacher relationships are bad in real life tho. i mean i haven't met anyone in obikin fandom who thinks student/teacher relationships are okay irl? granted i haven't met every obikin shipper but, uh, i've met a lot and i've never seen this underlying thread of 'we like this thing in this particular context (which is actually quite different from real life student/teacher relationships) so ofc we think it's acceptable behavior in real life).

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-09-27 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I don't know why people are shipping it. It's ok to ship fucked up things, I'm just saying that student/teacher relationships are usually fucked up.

I probably worded it really badly, but to me saying "it's not unhealthy at all!" implies that they think it's ok IRL too. Again, IDGAF if people ship it, but I will argue the point that some relationships are messed up.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got no skin in this game, but I'd say it comes from the part where Anakin was, like, 10 when he was taken away from his family to be trained by Obi Wan. There's already something a little cult-like about the Jedi, and when you throw fucking into the mix it sounds an awful lot like grooming. It doesn't actually get any better when you remember that Anakin was almost kicked out of the program for being too old, among other things.

I mean, Obikin is hot and tragic and manages to achieve actually chemistry on screen, which is something that Anidala failed miserably at. But it's not exactly a stretch to say that Master/Padawan relationships are inherently abusive when they mostly involve the Master choosing a child who has been raised by his cult and being almost exclusively responsible for training that child until they're of fuckable age.

I've seen some hate, but I think mainly because Ewan McGregor doesn't look ten years older? Much less the actual 18 years between the characters. Also people get a lot more sensitive about the woman being older. Fans of a het ship in my fandom with a 5 year age difference (with the guy older) regularly bash another het ship for the 2 year (woman older) age gap.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You've also got tiny Anakin little-kid flirting with Padme in Phantom Menace, which just emphasizes the age gap.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
The Padme Anakin age difference never bothered me. They were only like 4 years apart. And she wasn't interested when he was a kid. And it's natural for kids to get crushes.

On the other hand, everything else about Anakin/Padme bothered me.
