Yeah, describing (or part of their body) as "delicious" definitely makes me think of someone being sexually attracted to someone, though obviously that isn't what the author intended here.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember those books using "delicious" a lot as a physical descriptor and thinking it was creepy, so I liked the one time someone was raving about a "delicious" baby to a cranky relative and she snapped back with something like, "Are you planning to cook it and eat it?"

I'm just happy seeing an Anne secret. Been rewatching the first two miniseries. I really should find my copies and reread the books.

As for the secret, I think this is an example of language that would have been perfectly innocent at the time but today comes across as creepy.

I remember reading the first book as a kid, and people kept "ejaculating" all the time. I knew what the author meant, but yeah.

Not even as bad as Agatha Christie constantly referring to old women as "old pussies."

My favourite example of this is The Silver Chair...referring to Jill 'making love' to the giants...although I knew what was meant, a rather...painful-seeming image did flash in my mind.

Yeah, just reading that part made me gave me a small case of the heebie-jeebies. Especially the "Delicious lips" line. It's like the author forgot they were describing a ten year old, not a potential love interest.

Anne is a romantic, you pervert.

I wouldn't have included the last part because I think this is language that in today's age has connotations that wouldn't have occurred ot the author but do come up for readers. But yes, I think that Anne is someone who loves romantic descriptions for everything. It is completely innocent, it just doesn't seem that way to modern readers.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
....and yet I managed to read the passage without taking it in a pedophilic direction. So yes, OP is a pervert as far as I'm concerned.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Anne happens to be a huge creep sometimes too.

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-09-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think she would have come across as creepy to readers at the time it was written, though. I just think that the language has connotations today that it wouldn't have then.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not talking about the language, but her stalking and obsessing, etc. She was the girlfriend from hell really, hanging on to her loves by the teeth.

Anne's a creep. I'm a creep. You're a creep. Everyone's a creep. Creepy, creepy, creepy. Big fucking deal.

i honestly never thought i'd see that sentiment, even on the internet. still surprising me,, internet

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember reading that part when I was younger and feeling confused. I got the same feeling when I read The Blue Castle and Barney saying Valancy's voice was perfect for love making. He didn't mean what I thought he meant.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, yeah. In those days, "love making" just meant like...whispering sweet nothings, that kind of thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, if someone said that today I would think it was some kind of backhanded insult. Like when you say someone has a face that's made for radio. "He's got a voice that would sound better with something in his mouth!"

Idk, in the modern connotation it sounds to me like it means the kind of voice you'd really like to hear someone talk sexy to you in while you're lovin' them up

I first read the series when I was about 8 myself, so I guess I never realized how...odd that passage was. It is a pretty weirdly intense reaction considering she's his teacher and he's like in 4th grade.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't seem that weird to me. Just a very detailed description of a cute little kid.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be straight with you, I've met a lot of adorable kids in my lifetime but not once have I ever entertained a single thought about how delicious and pouty their mouths were. If that's normal for you, then... okay.
