Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone want to talk Clone Wars or the return of Thrawn?

I am so excited about Thrawn! The casting choice was great, his voice is exactly as I imagined years ago.

I'm really excited for Zahn's book to come out in April.

I was actually a little disappointed. The delivery was a little too flat. I didn't want him to be exuberant or anything, but I did hope for a little more to it. It just felt off.

I'm also really excited for the book. I've actually felt my nervousness increase lately that they're going to screw Thrawn up somehow. The constraints of the show and also the new cinematic trilogy might end up necessitating certain things that would end up undercutting the character and making him look like a dumbass. Or, they might give him a Boba Fett ending just to write him out if that becomes necessary. I really hope Dave Filoni has a plan for him and it's a tight one. I hope Thrawn ends up being sent off to the Unknown regions, rather than having anyone on Rebels be the one to kill him.

I agree a little bit with his introduction. I know the show is Rebels, but I really wanted more of Thrawn, so I'm curious to see how they'll characterize him from here out. I always felt like he commanded a stronger presence that you definitely didn't get here, the voice was good, but I think part of it is the way the show is drawn too.

I hope Thrawn isn't killed by the Rebels. Have they ever mentioned the Unknown Regions in any of the movies/tv shows? I know it's mentioned in the EU all the time, but those books no longer exist (except forever in my head and heart) so I'm not sure what they'll say about it him now.

I also didn't care for Wendig's books and Bloodline felt off in the Timeline because of Ben's age.

I could go on forever about Star Wars, haha.

I felt the volume of his lines was a bit off. I get that it was probably supposed to be all " cool calm and collected" and subtly menacing but I wanted to yell "could you SPEAK UP?" at the screen several times. And the way he kept dropping any consonants at the end of his words ticked me off a little.

MCU

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently Marvel went ahead and filmed the next 4 Stan Lee cameos all at once. Just in case. :O

Re: MCU

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It sounded a lot more like an ease for him thing than an if you die thing.

GotG 2, Spiderman Homecoming & Thor Ragnarok are/were all filming about the same time so the scripts and his roles would have been pretty final. The only question is about the 4th role and was it a late filming for Doctor Strange, or an early filming for Black Panther.

Re: MCU

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry. They can replace him with a really creepy, uncanny valley CGI Stan Lee if need be. Think of those nightmare fuel Orville Redenbacher commercials. Good times.

Re: MCU

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of OT and rambling but since this is an MCU thread...

...are there any people in the fandom who like the other MCU movies besides TWS and the Netflix shows? Like, TWS is amazing, no lie, but I really enjoy a lot of the other MCU movies - CA:TFA, Thor, GotG, First Avengers movie. But it seems like all anyone wants to talk about is WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN WITH BUCKY AND CAP where I'm excited to see what happens in Thor: Ragnarok and Spiderman: Homecoming and Infinity War and all that jazz.

Am I weird for being interested in how the larger narrative of the MCU (EG what's going to happen with Thanos and the Infinity Stones) pans out?

Re: MCU

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one! I'm SUPER excited for Black Panther, Luke Cage and Spider-Man: Homecoming! I'm also pretty excited about Ragnorok, mostly because of the new cast members and because I love Taika Waititi.

I enjoy all the Cap movies but TWS is the only one that I really LOVE. I also care about comics!Bucky significantly more than MCU!Bucky so the way the fandom revolves around all things Stucky is a bit boring, imo.

I'm interested in the grand scheme (though I realize I rarely do meta on f!s). I think it's because the bf is interested in it too, so if I talk about it for 2 hours in r/l I don't feel much like writing an essay about it after.

I'm sort of less interested in Ragnarok (but I'll go see it) and Spiderman (same). With Spiderman it's more like - I LOVE the kid they cast and it's great, but, since he's so young - I'm not sure how they can avoid some orgin elements AGAIN. I'm just going to wait to see it with an open mind, but don't really speculate about it.

I AM curious about Strange though, and how mystical elements might fit into the grander scheme.

I like the other movies too, I am so, so here for Black Panther, like I need it now. GIVE IT TO ME. Also my interest with the Thor movies has been revived with Thor 3 news, we get Valkyrie yessssssssssssssssssss. And Hela! Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss. (I've been hoping to see one of those two in the movies and now I get both in one! I'd love to have Amora to complete the trifecta of Thor ladies I love but I'm happy with those two anyway).

Lord knows how the Thanos stuff is going to pan out atm though since Infinity Wars part 1 and 2 have been scrapped, or changed. So I'll wait to hear some more news on that before I start ruminating on it.

Anyone watching Designated Survivor?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's the only new show I'm watching and I'm liking it so far!

Maggie Q's character sure had a great parking spot in front of that bar <-- these are the kind of things I can't help but notice.

I'm watching.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
That was a really fortuitous spot.

None of the new shows I've watched so far (The Good Place, This Is Us, Bull, Lethal Weapon, Designated Survivor, MacGyver) have either made me think that I don't want to watch or that I must watch from now on, though Designated Survivor seems like one of the best. On the one hand, none of them are terrible, on the other none of them have really grabbed me, but pilots are always such weird episodes, sometimes they completely set the tone, sometimes everything is really exaggerated (character traits included) and gets pulled back subsequent episodes, and then sometimes the pilot has very little resemblance to the rest of the episodes. So, I will probably watch at least a couple more episodes each.

So, who likes the Tremors movies because for who knows what reason, they've decided to make a *6th* movie..

Re: Fandom Talk

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I have watched all the Tremors including the horrible flashback one and the kinda weird last one with the mildly amusing Jamie Kennedy.

I will watch the 6th one cause I hate myself.

Re: Fandom Talk

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
There was a 4th and 5th?

Re: Fandom Talk

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Tremors anon:

Yup. Four had Burt Gummer's ancestor in it (town was originally named Rejection, if my memory serves) and then Five was the most recent one. I think that took place in Africa? Jamie Kennedy costarred (and he's returning for Six)

(There was also a TV series at one point)

I love the first movie, it's everything I want in a dumb monster flick. I've only seen two and three from the rest of them so far and they're alright, they get exponentially more ridiculous so at least they're entertaining.

OZ

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
So I started watching HBO's Oz a few weeks ago, and devoured it for a few seasons. But now I'm halfway through season 4 and I'm getting burnt out. It's just starting to feel a little... over the top? I mean, it was probably that way form the start, but at this point it's hard to suspend belief that they wouldn't be massively concerned that these dudes keep murdering each other. It also just feels stupidly cruel at times, like the first episode of season four when that guy was being bullied and even complained, and the dude who is supposed to be running Oz didn't do shit. He's supposed to be a good guy, but everything about this prison is so incompetent.

I really just want to skip through to all the gay scenes tbh. Though I enjoy some of the characters, at this point, there just feels like there's so much... filler? Especially since they killed off one of the most menacing but captivating characters halfway through this season.

LOL McManus, a disaster of a person who never should have run anything at all. 4 is especially over the top because they thought they were getting canceled and figured they'd go out in a blaze of glory, which would have been vastly preferable to how they actually went out, by killing off anyone interesting and focusing on random peripheral characters I've never seen a single person give a single shit about. I'm usually very accepting of character death as a part of storytelling, especially in dark and violent universes like Oz, but there's one late in the series that was so stupid and unnecessary and just plain hamfisted that it still pisses me off to this day, lol. I loved him more than anyone else ever on that show, but man, even if I hadn't, that was some bafflingly terrible writing. I ended up hatewatching the rest of it. Character you mention was also great and irreplaceable. Feel free to skip through any way you want, seriously. Saaaaave yourself!

Re: OZ

(Anonymous) 2016-09-28 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol the hard thing is, I feel myself LIKING McManus - he's written to have a conscience and stand up against injustice, and I like the acting of the character. He's also frequently the underdog. But shit, he really is inept. So are the guards. When you have this many murders/rapes happening, you think you'd actually monitor your prisoners a little better.
