Unrealistic expectations will do that to anybody

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-09-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing, chief: if you'd started young and gone to all the right schools you STILL probably wouldn't make it to these big productions. These productions are a tiny tiny sliver of the industry.

So do you want to do creative work or do you just want to be the famous person being lauded for creative work?

If it's the former, get started.

Well put.

And even among the sliver of people that get to work on big-budget films, only a sliver of them get to work on films they actually like, that you are probably a fangirl/boy of.

I have a friend who moved out to California with the dream of doing movie editing/effects/etc. And his big break is working on a dumb comedy series that's gone on for about six movies too long, that's sort of "discount movie bin" famous. He hates it, but hey, that's how it goes and he's way luckier than most.

Yep, pretty much. I started writing seriously in my late 40s and won Writers of the Future in my 50s. Do I wish I'd started sooner? Hell, yes. Did I sit down and whine that it was "too late"? Hell, no. I sat in front of my keyboard and got to scribbling. I have a novel published by a small press that's done moderately well enough that they want a sequel and a bunch of shorts published here and there.

As my husband likes to say, "Can't never could." "Too late" is a figment of a limited mind.

This is along the lines of what I was going to say:

If this is really what you wanted to do, then it wouldn't matter if it was big-budget or not because you'd be working your passion. Having more eyes on your stuff and more accolades is nice, but a steady paycheck for doing what you love IS the reward.

A+ comment. Age really isn't a barrier to creative work. Time and money, yeah, but no more than they are to anything.

If you want to create a Tolkien-level massive world, then just do it. Draw maps, or build it in Minecraft. Sketch costume designs. Invent a language. DM a DnD campaign or start painting and collecting figures. Learn to sew and make costumes if that's your jam. Learn to do SFX makeup if that's your jam, and just do it as a hobby. Write your fucking novel. Become the eccentric that builds a massive model city in their garage. Whatever gets you off. But don't whine about how you WISH you could do cool shit if only you weren't so old.

This. Lamenting that you'll never reach perfection so never starting is a fool's errand. I can guarantee that Peter Jackson's starting aim wasn't to reach the success he eventually did. He just wanted to make weird shit. He probably would have continued to make weird shit even if no one else ever saw it. Hell, I bet Tolkien would have kept making up his strange personal mythology even if The Hobbit had been a failure. Do you have an idea you want to share? Do it, even if it's made out of lego and filmed on a phone. You might not reach the heights whatever happens, but you certainly won't if you do nothing. And maybe there'll be some people out there who dig what you do.
