Re: Book club - GRACELING discussion!!!

Oh also, worldbuilding. I was very sceptical about the whole idea of Graces but came around to in the end. I think as mentioned upthread, Katsa and Po are superpowered even among those with graces. I assume because Po's lets him predict damn near everything and Katsa's grace is pretty much "staying alive" - tbh her Grace reminds me of Darwin in the Xmen, I always thought he had a really interesting power and wanted to see more about it.

So I've come around to the graces and their special, unique eyes. Especially since aside from at the start, the eyes are not lingered on overly as to become annoying and repetitive.

I did like how most of them weren't terribly overpowered, in fact aside from the mindreading/precognitive ones they were mostly just enhanced normal skills. Like fighting or swimming. Of course that only makes Katsa and Po stand out more with their special unique Graces haha.

Though with Katsa's Grace for (supposedly) killing, I expected her to be able to like, insta-murder with her mind. I was glad it was more unmagical than that.

I loved how you could be Graced at cooking. I want to eat that guy's food man.

It reminds me of the secret and discussion about food descriptions in literature that we had recently. In this case with the chef being Graced I would have loved a little more detail on the food! What did he cook? How was it different from an ordinary cook's work?

I didn't even think about the "kill with your mind" thing which is funny because I've seen that skill in other canons. It definitely would not have worked as well for the story, at all. I do wonder if that is a Grace people could have though. I mean if mind reading exists, why not? That would be really frightening. And interesting...

I kinda liked the eyes mostly because a. I like thinking of cool color combinations and b. I like how they settled an indefinite period of time after birth and it's interesting to think how much of a shock that could be for a family, especially if the kid was already a few years old. It was indicated with Po that they just changed color one day, but I like the idea better that they change gradually, so the family wonders for a while if something is up...

I liked the idea of different coloured eyes but I struggled with the "ANY COLOUR" bit. Like sure, two different but general human coloured eyes. But purple and blue? white and black? This is getting too edgy for me ahahah.

Then I remember in the old days I had OCs with blue hair and purple eyes so young me would have loved it.

and I really like the coloured eyes popped up at random stages, so just because your kid made it to 5 or 10, they're not out of the "risk" zone. I wouldn't mind finding when they're conventionally considered a safe age, if coloured eyes can pop up in a settled 20 or 30.

I also like they could have coloured eyes from birth but not know what they're good at for years. A kind of graceling limbo of what am i what do i do.
